This new perspective deeply influenced the album’s creation. Collaborating mainly with Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus, The Rub departs from her previous sleek pop sound, embracing ’70s R&B and soft rock with warm, lush instrumentation. Recorded at Pachyderm Studios, the album blends full-band arrangements with unique sonic textures to support Smith’s expressive vocals and intimate storytelling. Songs like lead single “Peaches” and “Hey There’s My Girl” explore themes of nostalgia, vulnerability, love, and heartbreak with candidness and emotional depth. Smith describes the album as a balance between music and her new life as a mother and restaurant co-owner, created without concern for external validation. Mal Not Bad: Mal Hauser is a Los Angeles-based artist who independently released their debut album This Is Your New Life under the moniker Mal Not Bad in 2024, earning widespread acclaim and support from outlets including KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, BBC Radio 6, NPR, and editorial playlists across Spotify and Apple Music. The record received praise from The Guardian (“addictively replayable, fantastic”), SPIN (“Mal carves out a sacred space of live instrumentation and ambient electronics”), CLASH (“teems with possibilities”), as well as features in Wonderland, The Independent, Consequence, COLORS, NME, and more. A self-producing, multi-instrumentalist force, Mal co-mixed and co-directed/self-edited the music videos for This Is Your New Life while supporting Skullcrusher and illuminati hotties across the US, UK, EU, and Canada. As a songwriter, producer, performer, and engineer, Mal has collaborated with a range of artists including Mk.gee, illuminati hotties, Jay Som, Gordi, Noso, Skullcrusher, Miya Folick, Matt Berninger, and Rett Madison.
