Our speaker for August will be Dr. Isabel Gauthier, Vice Chair of the Psychology Department at Vanderbilt, where she heads the Object Perception laboratory, with "Why Some People See What Others Miss". She is the author of numerous studies that challenge widely held beliefs about who can become a perceptual expert. We tend to think that with enough practice, anyone can get good at tasks like reading X-rays, sight-reading music, or recognizing a perfectly plated dish. But Dr. Gauthier's research shows that experience alone might not be enough. People differ wildly in a general visual skill she calls “o” — kind of like the IQ of seeing. It’s your raw ability to recognize, match, and make sense of what you see. It’s surprisingly independent of book smarts (although it’s also related to how well you can process complex auditory information!). This research tells us that in jobs where visual skills matter, we might be missing out on talent — or misunderstanding why some people thrive and others struggle. Come find out what your eyes might be saying about your brain.
