FIST enters the final days of summer with a lineup of sweltering intensity. UK techno mastermind Ø [Phase] returns to the venue. A mainstay of the seminal Token Records, the Ø [Phase] discography is one of the landmark oeuvres for stark, penetrating techno. In 2021, he started a new chapter in his career with the introduction of Modwerks, a new label focused primarily on his solo output and collaborations. The move seems to have opened some new portals; while his output has never flagged in excellence, the Modwerks material seems revitalized with a fresh spirit of raw physicality and a loose, kinetic playfulness. Colombian-born Adriana Lopez is one of those techno artists who keeps the energy at a peak without breaking a sweat. Operating in the grittier edges of the genre, Lopez nonetheless finds a pocket of pure groove that grips you and refuses to let go. Residents Word of Command and DJ Clone up the ante with some seriously throttling club power.
Kevin Aviance has become a key artist at STUDIO. Having built his career in the NY club scene of the ‘90s, Aviance became a breakout star of the voguing and ballroom underground with a series of hits that attracted attention far beyond the culture that birthed them. His original tracks were defiant, bombastic house anthems like “Rhythm is My Bitch,” embodying the feverish passion of the era. Now experiencing an artistic renaissance three decades later, Aviance has shown no diminishment with age. In his own words, “I can’t stop what’s in me. I tried doing that once, and it made me sick. I don’t want to be like a root with no water. I don’t want to be out in this world knowing that I can’t have joy. I can’t imagine being sad or being old or being a has-been. I have breath in me, I’m alive, I’m healthy, I’m good.” Physical Therapy returns to lay down some thick, syrupy body music. Few in the NY underground know their way around a wiggly bassline and a swung break quite like Physical Therapy. A master of balearic breeziness, UK funkiness and lysergic afters energy, the Allergy Season label boss is one of those indelible artists with a genuinely unique sensibility. Ana B joins for a special house set. The Ukrainian artist has become an essential name in the modern techno underground. Splitting her time between Kyiv and New York, Ana’s approach reflects a wide-open sensibility that can range from huge, warehouse sounds to passages of mercurial poignancy to glistening, anthemic catharsis.
