Description
For the first time ever, BASEMENT presents a takeover that extends out of the venue and into the open air Ruins stage behind Knockdown Center. Following the huge success of the outdoor sets at WIRE, we’re turning the keys over to Mala Junta to bring us from the peak afternoon sun all the way through the deepest moments up the night and past dawn. The Berlin-based collective has achieved international renown for their visionary, queer community-forward parties. Absolutely notorious and featuring some of the most deadly residents currently operating, Mala Junta has helped to catalyze a new generation.
The Ruins program is defined by b2bs. DJ TOOL goes head to head with Kim Ann Foxman. It’s an inspired pairing; both are fearless selectors with a taste for the cutting edge. DJ TOOLl’s roiling, trance-kissed grooves usually land on the harder side of the spectrum, but his taste and capabilities extend well beyond. Foxman is one of NY’s greatest, and while rightly revered as a house queen, Foxman’s euphoric acid-drenched sets bring a touch of coursing darkness. These two should have no problems finding common ground for this special house-heavy collaboration. Shaun J. Wright and Makadsi are two venerated figures of NY’s queer house underground. Both are regulars at STUDIO, where they each embrace an unbridled, soulful and classic sound. Wright’s roots in Chicago are on full display every time, while Makadsi effervescent pummel calls back to some of NY’s most iconic club moments. Sterling Juan Diaz and Josh Steers are each marked by a flair for the raw and hedonistic. Pushing house to the breaking point, both artists draw out a feverish intensity in their mixes. On most nights, this lineup would be the full package. For this takeover, it’s just the beginning.
Dr. Rubinstein headlines BASEMENT. One of the finest acid techno DJs today, Rubinstein brings a true raver spirit to the booth. Her genuine love of music and respect for the dancers radiates out onto the dancefloor, and is matched only by her outstanding craft. Dr. Rubinstein has been rightfully embraced by the most committed dancers and club-goers across the world because, more than most, she really gets it. Few people deliver a set quite like she does; bombastic, wild, grooving and immaculate. Mala Junta resident Yazzus always delivers with an incendiary touch. Criss-crossing genres with chaotic precision and intuitive clarity, Yazzus’ capacity to turn a dance floor on its head is unquestioned. In her own original productions and edits, Yazzus seizes on a blinding energy that never relents. TT completes the lineup. Their uniquely exploratory vision encompasses in equal parts anthemic release, hypnotic wormholes, psychedelic backwaters and more.
Mala Junta resident Hyperaktivist headlines STUDIO. Always a highlight, Hyperaktivist taps into a rushing urgency and blinding power that never dims. Although typically operating in a darkly-hued, techno/trance underworld, her house sets are always special occasions. The energy for this set will be off the charts. Let’s see where she takes us. State of Bliss founder Ian Crane draws on ravey radiance and a trippy sensuality. He’s become a mainstay at STUDIO on the strength of his roiling, bubbly and effortless approach. Why Be makes his welcome return to the room. An artist of vast range, Why Be’s output includes plaintive composition, jagged audio collage and avant garde club bangers. Both as one half of the Yegorka label and on his NTS residency, Why Be shows us again and again how daring dance music can be. Having emerged in the deconstructed club era, he’s forged a path forward that sacrifices none of that genre’s experimental tendencies, while also finding fresh forms of expression.
