Description
Since the club’s earliest days, Function has been a consistent presence at BASEMENT. One of techno’s leading lights, his work forsakes flash and spectacle, centering a musical output that never flags. From his earliest productions, Function has shown a remarkable touch, taking audiences into a space of rich, mercurial emotion and system-rattling power. Many artists are content to rest on their laurels and endlessly re-iterate a familiar sound. Function, a tireless auteur, helped to invent modern techno in his solo work and with Sandwell District and he’s still pushing himself. Takaaki Itoh is another grandmaster of the genre. The Japanese producer exemplifies the hypnotic depth that characterizes some of his home country’s most lauded electronic music, but still pushes the sound forward with plenty of bite. Takaaki Itoh makes brutality sensual. Colombia’s Vile returns to the room. Their darkly-hued techno surges with gnawing, writhing intensity.
The Carry Nation closes out the month. If you’ve heard them, you know; they are unstoppable. And if you live and club in New York, you’ve heard them. The Carry Nation are load-bearing pillars of queer nightlife in NY and standard setters for communities across the country and indeed the globe. The duo of Will Automagic and Nita Aviance are one of the great pairings in house music, bringing a riveting, unifying and explosive soulfulness that borders on the spiritual. Anthony Naples is one of the paragons of leftfield club music. Emerging over a decade ago as part of the cultural moment dubbed “outsider house,” he’s since proven to be a ceaselessly inventive DJ, producer and label boss. His Incienso imprint is a standout hub for deliciously different takes on minimal, ambient and even reggaeton. Under his watchful eye, it all makes sense. Miracles make his debut. The LA-based artist tweaks house music into a fluid, sensual journey.
