New York's legendary Elysian Fields will appear at The Chapel to play songs from their 13th album, What The Thunder Said. Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow have set the gold standard for a career that builds respect among musical peers, a slow burn that brought them to Europe twice last year and into territories they had never before visited, their music continuing to reach new adoring fans some three decades in as a band. This will be a rare West Coast appearance.Known for their moody, sensual music and the velvety vocals of singer Jennifer Charles, Elysian Fields history in San Francisco includes many appearances, starting with a weird show at the Fillmore in 1996 and ranging lightly over the Bay Area from South-of-Market to Oakland; Charles’s well-known collaboration, under the moniker Lovage, with locals Dan The Automator and Mike Patton; and guitarist Oren Bloedow's memorable gigs here with Meshell Ndegeocello, among numerous influential artists. Oren and Jennifer love to sleep, eat and explore in the Mission district. When they’re not enjoying San Francisco they are writing and making (many) records, touring extensively throughout Europe, contributing to tribute concerts and albums, co-creating work with artists of various disciplines, and running a small local music venue in Brooklyn where they reside. They are excited to appear at The Chapel this night and with the talented and lovely Ella Hunt.
“Almost 30 years in for this dynamic duo, and we still fall under the sensual spell of their singular dreamy sound.” – Liberation
“Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow elevate the dialogue between voice and a guitar to heights fascinating and haunting, creating exquisite works of art. We expected with this record to be struck by elegance and melancholy, but what we couldn’t imagine was listening to a collection of new songs of such greatness.”
– Magic Magazine
“A darkly spellbinding new album which confirms Elysian Fields has made rock a major art, feeding our imaginations with literature and discrete subversion.” – Indiepop
“A musical purity that touches on pure grace.” – Slow Show
“This majestic duo makes a welcome return with What The Thunder Said. Oren Bloedow’s infinite instrumental palette, as loose as it is organic, is matched by Jennifer Charles’s often imitated but never equalled vocals...And we never tire of this precious alchemy... And we bow our heads in admiration, because to succeed again and again in making this singular flame travel, while never losing itself in mainstream temptations, is admirable... These two adventurers are above all true and great musicians. Beautiful record.” – Le Village Pop
“They manage to navigate between their jazzy gold-tinged melodies and more powerful arrangements. Likewise, Jennifer’s voice, between delicacy and bewitchment, continues to set the tone for impeccable concerts.” — Les Inrockuptibles
