w/ Kolumbo
Pearl & the Oysters, international adventurers in eclectic pop, crash-landed their starship in Los Angeles in 2020. Born and schooled in Paris, Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack embarked on a nomadic romance fueled by music, performing in New York’s jazz clubs and navigating the DIY art rock scene in Gainesville, Florida. Now based in Los Angeles, their evolving sound fits perfectly within a vibrant scene, where their space-age jazz-pop is widely appreciated.
Juliette and Joachim met on the first day of high school in Paris. Both bespectacled and music-obsessed, they were drawn together by a "poetic connection" and shared heroes like Burt Bacharach, Kurt Weill, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. "It’s very French of us to be into Brazil, but like, 1960s-French," Joachim notes. Their shared passion for music deepened at the Sorbonne, where they studied musicology and developed a romantic relationship. Despite facing resistance from academic mentors—Joachim’s classical composition teachers at the conservatory didn’t understand his pop music pursuits—they stayed committed to their craft.
Kolumbo:
Since he was a landlocked Dallas, Texas kid, beach culture has held a tropical mystique for Kolumbo composer, arranger, keyboardist Frank LoCrasto. Family trips documented by camcorder videos, featuring slinky jazz-fusion soundtracks are etched in the Brooklyn-based artist’s memory. In his mind, there will always be a fantasyland replete with wicker furniture, pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, the smell of vanilla-scented suntan lotion, and breathtaking aqua water expanses.
These days, LoCrasto uses his imagination to create dreamy musical locales with the Brooklyn-based, Tropically-minded Kolumbo. The tiki-jazz torchbearers are released their second full length, Sandy Legs, in September last year, on the Allah-Las record label, Calico Discos, a boutique imprint now a part of Innovative Leisure. The 8-song album conjures the lush sounds of 1960s exotica, 1970s Brazilian fusion and the jazz-funk albums produced by Creed Taylor for CTI.
