Can You Pass The Acid Test?
The legendary Acid Tests were a series of experimental parties held across California during the mid-1960s, organized by the great American novelist Ken Kesey, along with Ken Babbs and his “band of Merry Pranksters,” as a way to expand the possibilities of fun, thought, and artistic expression while under the influence of the still-legal LSD. The tests were a new kind of happening featuring a myriad of stimuli in the guise of light shows, music, costumes, dancing, and anything else dreamt up by the organizers and attendees, who by design blended together as one group in these magic crucibles. When famed chemist Owsley Stanley walked into an Acid Test featuring the Grateful Dead as the house band, he found his tribe, and soon infused the scene with better LSD and sound than had ever been known.
There was a feeling among those involved– Kesey, Owsley, the musicians and the artists– that their actions would have a global impact on both culture and technology, rippling across time and space. Made legendary by the famous Tom Wolfe novel, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, they have inspired countless artistic, social, and technological movements around the world, and were in many ways the birth of our modern concert and festival experience.
Join us for the ELECTRIKOOLAID on Saturday, May 17th, as The Midway SF and Legion of Bloom host a celebration and tribute to these psychedelic pioneers who lit up the path and pushed our collective thinking ever Furthur.
