Description
DMC WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIPS is the world’s largest DJ competition, dating back 40 years to 1985, when it started in London with the vision that “DJs are the central force of tomorrow’s music.”
Talented DJs who emerged from DMC include Mix Master Mike, from the legendary Beastie Boys, A-Trak known for his collaborations with Armand Van Helden and Dave1 from Chromeo, and the iconic three-time champion DJ Craze, a pioneer in bass music. Additionally, internationally renowned artists like Hudson Mohawke from WARP records and Cashmere Cat have also made their mark.
The Japan championship began back in 1990, and since then, Japan has consistently remained a powerhouse. Notable champions include DJ KENTARO, who became the first Asian world champion with a record-breaking score in 2002, DJ IZOH and DJ YUTO who continue to drive the Japanese hip-hop scene, DJ RENA who became the youngest champion at just 12 years old, and DJ Matsunaga from Creepy Nuts who recently rocked Tokyo Dome with an audience of 50,000 people.
In 2025, marking the 40th anniversary of DMC, the world championship will be held in Japan for the first time in Asia this Oct! A new wave of turntablism will spread from Japan to the world.
Entry for the Japan championship has also begun. In addition to the SCRATCH BATTLE, which tests scratching skills, and THE OPEN, which demands a blend of mixing techniques and storytelling, new categories have been introduced. The battle for the title of Japan’s No.1 DJ and ultimately, the world’s best DJ has begun!
