Description
Deep, hypnotic techno takes over. Function has been a steady presence in the club for years, and has remained at techno’s cutting edge for the duration of his career. The story is well told, but remains iconic: already resident of the infamous Limelight in his earliest years, a correspondence between Function and Karl O’Connor aka Regis turned into one of techno’s most remarkable collaborations: Sandwell District. Beyond the confines of that partnership, Function’s solo productions are remarkable for their power: icy, menacing and yet elegant and musical, Function is the rare techno artist who can produce club tracks that are as evocative and memorable as your favorite song. His most recent releases on his own Infrastructure NY are buy-on-sight, instantly seminal entries in the modern canon. Rrose is an artist with years-long ties to Function. Their breakout track “Waterfall” was released by Sandwell District in 2011. It’s a stone classic, and a remarkable example of how explosive club impact can intersect with cerebral rigor. Since that point, Rrose had stayed the course, going further into the wormhole with a steady deluge of immaculate works that are as indebted to psychoacoustics and phenomenological avant garde compositions as they are slinky, driving techno. A proponent of the same darkly hypnotic zones as Function and Rrose, Kimskii’s command is steeped in years of sonic exploration. Her encyclopedic command of techno and seamless technical command work in service of a visceral, defiant mixing style that grabs the dancefloor with urgency and magnetic charisma. Kimskii has proven to be an unstoppable force whose artistic evolution remains ceaseless.
STUDIO offers a perfect counterpoint with a heavy dose of disco, synthwave, house and more. Kendal headlines STUDIO. Kendal’s music explodes with color and unrestrained sensuality. Ian Crane has become an unmissable STUDIO mainstay, and he returns to the room for a b2b with Regularfantasy. The State of Bliss founder adds a dash of euphoria every time he comes through, drawing on some of the most wide-eyed and utopian strains of rave from across eras. Regularfantasy’s easy-going bounce, on the other hand, glides through some of the breeziest corners of dance music. It’s a well-suited pairing that sees each artist tackling overlapping agendas of pleasure seeking through unique entry points. Taking a turn into the shadows, Andi and Arvin T resume their b2b. These two have forged a potent alliance. Andi is, of course, the visionary behind the long-running Synthicide, while Arvin T fuses darker ‘80s sounds with slamming rave power.
