About Jawn of the Dead

The dedication of the band to both the songs of the Grateful Dead and their spirit of musical exploration sets them apart, as their growing audience are now discovering. In March 2019, Philadelphia area guitarist Rich Hill gathered together a select group of musicians to do a one-off show as a Grateful Dead tribute night at The Fainting Goat in Glenolden, PA. The turn-out, the performances and the synergy were so strong that by the end of the night, they all knew that they had something special and should continue. And thus ”this thing of ours”, this ”jawn of the Dead” as it came to be known, began its strange trip, hopefully a long one, around the Philly region.
Jawn Of The Dead (JOTD) is an energetic tribute to the songwriting, style and musical tradition pioneered by the Grateful Dead, the godfathers of the jam band world. JOTD’s mission is to continue this tradition of fusing eclectic elements rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, gospel, reggae, world music and psychedelia with improvisation so that the music can be anything at any time, anywhere, like a “jawn” which can be anything you need it to be at any given time.

JAH PEOPLE is a collection of individual personalities and talents rolled into one big musical spliff! Core members—Dean Rubenstein, Alesia Dessau, Noah Sokoloff, Andrew Walls, Mike Stankus, and Anthony Gentile—have been sharing melodic messages of love, spirituality, and unity with audiences and communities since 2011.
In 2015, JAH PEOPLE released their first original album, RISING HIGH, which included an updated version of Marley’s “Exodus,” and guest appearances from Philly rap legend FREEWAY and reggae staple RAS PROFESSOR. Positive fan responses have led to coveted stages, such as The Fillmore in Philadelphia, Brooklyn Bowl in New York City, and The Hamilton in Washington, D.C.
