On our first national tour in twenty-three years, the Young Fresh Fellows celebrated the 40th anniversary of that legendary first album, on the heels of a smokin’ remixed version released on Omnivore Records (https://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/fabulous-sounds/). With new drummer, John Perrin of NRBQ (the ONLY sticksman deemed qualified to replace the retiring Tad Hutchison), the ridiculous run started in the Pacific Northwest and ended at Wilco’s Solid Sound Fest. With but one day off during the frenetic, jam-packed, self-booked tour, our typically rash decision to record at The Loft in Chicago that day seemed rather dubious. Coming off five raging sets in the previous three days, with two members ill, and armed with zero new songs, what could go wrong? The results are eleven songs, learned on the spot, tracked live with famed Tom Schick at the helm. Thanks to the over-the-top assistance of the Wilco/Loft team Tom, Jeff Tweedy, Mark Greenberg — we brought nothing, waltzed in, and plugged in — somehow it worked. So well in fact, that we decided to release this version of that day’s effort to the world. Well, that is, to press up 500 copies on vinyl only, a made-in-a-day LP (complete with live scratch vocals) — a sonic photograph of a combo still rattling way well beyond its sell-date. Our hope is to “finish” the record at some point… adding backing vocals, keyboards, tambourines, fiddles, acoustic guitars, ubiquitous mellotron, star guest-turns, etc. And if it doesn’t happen, well, the lucky few will get the drift from this record, called, not surprisingly: LOFT.
