Description
Dax J headlines a night of serious power at BASEMENT. The Monnom Black label boss stands as one of the most fearless and devastating DJs working today. Since the release of his breakout LP “Shades of Black,” he’s been a standard-bearer for propulsive, hair-raising techno. His most recent work, “War Is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength,” sees Dax J working at the peak of his powers, balancing absolutely riotous warehouse power with his intuitive knack for melodic touches. Greek artist ANNĒ moves through similar, shadowy realms. Her releases on respected labels like Soma, Mutual Rytm and SPANDAU20 all display a fierce vision of uncompromising techno that embodies the relentless grooviness of the ‘90s golden era. Annie Lew completes the lineup. Each time she returns to the room, the energy is higher than before. Lew dives straight in with massive selections that tower over the dancefloor.
Kevin Aviance’s tenure at STUDIO has been one of the more iconic runs of the last couple years. A legend of NY club culture and the voice behind some of the queerest music ever put to tape, Aviance helped to define ballroom. His productions are strikingly intense, challenging the listener to get on his level. It’s rare to hear an artist as defiant as Aviance, but once you lock in, there’s no turning back. Chris Cruse continues to make his presence felt in STUDIO. The Spotlight founder’s flair for the seductive surfaces and glistening sheens of the ‘80s goes well beyond the throwback. In these clean, elegant arrangements and unrestrained emotional expressions, Cruse finds a sassy and exuberant freedom. Let loose, Cruse has it covered. Michael Cignarale recently moved to Brooklyn from China, where he was the sole resident DJ of MEDUSA, a party that stood as a bastion of queer expression and forward thinking music. His sets weave some of house music’s boldest moments with his own original productions, which he describes as “sex-drenched 90’s inspired house music.” Safe to say he’s holding nothing back.
