Herrensauna continues its run at BASEMENT with a showcase of some of the collective’s most significant artists. MCMLXXXV and DJ Saliva play BASEMENT alongside Markus. MCMLXXXV harnesses the storm with a tough, mercurial poise. Keeping an urgent pace, MCMLXXXV laces his sets with febrile, uncanny textures that secrete through the speakers and glow with a disquieting darkness. DJ Saliva tweaks things with a dose of scorched electro and sneering techno. The Herrensauna resident finds a pressure point between swirling, immersive Detroit-informed explorations and more precision-tooled, knife’s edge bangers. NY’s Markus matches the pair with his own uniquely melted take on tightly coiled machine funk. Schacke is one of the club’s most regular, and most adventurous artists. A truly subversive presence, Schacke winds a path to dancefloor transcendence through byways as disparate as eurodance, noise and moody atmospherics. But it all comes together in his ultra-unique, endlessly creative techno hybrids. Of course, “Kisloty People” was a breakout hit, but tracks for Posh Isolation or SPFDJ’s Intrepid Skin writhe with bristling 3D textures and rave inversions. Schacke remains, always and forever, an artist who is one step ahead of the audience. Kim Anh evokes the shimmering glamour and lusty defiance of the ‘80s. Extending far beyond the casual stylistic hat tip, Anh amplifies the queer markers of that time, unearthing timeless expressions of irrepressible humanity amidst the pain and blinding optimism of a lost era. Ian Crane’s propulsive, blissful tears through Italo-tinged dance are a welcome infusion of euphoria delivered with a wink and a smile.
