20 years strong in the game. A business man, inventor of DENCH, a social media legend, and pioneer of the UK grime scene putting hard graft into his career, one of the first millionaires from grime music, multiple chart hits to his name, MOBO award winner, entrepreneur and a nice guy to boot.
Not too bad for a kid from Walthamstow who used to trade raps with his schoolyard friends to impress the girls. These humble beginnings take us back to the E17 where Lethal , fresh out of school and studying hard at college formed More Fire Crew with Ozzie B and Neeko. Signed to Polydor they achieved a massive UK No. 7 chart hit with 'Oi'.
A few years later, Bizzle formed his own Lethal Bizzle Records imprint. And at the end of 2004, he released the single ‘Pow! (Forward)’. Produced by Dexplicit, it entered at the U.K. charts and earned him a MOBO award for Best Single.
‘Pow (Forward)’ became the anthem of the underground music scene - an accolade it still holds. However its popularity in clubs and the energy it caused led to it being banned by many major radio outlets, and clubs up and down the country banned Bizzle from performing it.
His only outlet to perform was at indie clubs and dingy bars in the UK, where he could slip onto the bill unnoticed. He embarked on a Club NME tour in 2006 and won over skeptical indie audiences with his high-paced energetic live performance.
Bizzle was swiftly signed to V2 Music to release his solo grime debut album ‘Against All Oddz’, released in mid-2005. His second album ‘Back to Bizznizz’ was one of the great experimental delights of 2007, incorporating collaborations with Kate Nash and Babyshambles, and inspired takes on anthems by The Clash (‘Police On My Back’) and The Ruts (‘Babylon’s Burning The Ghetto’) that charmed punks, rockers and indie kids while keeping his cred as one of the urban underground’s roughest MC’s intact.
From appearing on The NME cool list to slagging off David Cameron on Newsnight; from performing with Pete Doherty at Glasto 2007 to starring on the same year’s Top Gear special for Comic Relief, to rapping with Dame Judi Dench Bizzle has made a specialty of crossing over to the most unlikely audiences without compromising his street credentials.
10 years on the from Bizzle’s first major release of Pow, he brought back a new version Pow 2011, brought about by fans and other artists on Twitter. Featuring a stellar cast of the appearing on the track in order; Lethal Bizzle, JME, Wiley, Chipmunk, Face, P Money, Ghetts and Kano.
Bizzle went on to achieve independent chart success with ‘The Drop’ (feat. Cherri V) and ‘Rari Workout’ (feat. JME & Skepta) - both of which were released independently through Bizzle’s own label, Dench Records and charted at no. 20 and no. 11 in the UK Singles charts respectively. Not forgetting the inimitable ‘Fester Skank’ (which charted at no. 11 in the UK singles chart in 2015).
Alongside his career as an MC, Bizzle has graced the silver screen, presented a prime time Sky TV show, and proved himself to be a thriving entrepreneur, with the founding of his own imprint Dench Records, the launch of clothing line Stay Dench in Selfridges and the international expansion of his Dench Party club nights.
And Lethal Bizzle is back for the Pow 20 year anniversary with a special show to celebrate this milestone.
Presented by AEG.
