Description
Hold on tight: D.Dan closes out BASEMENT for the year. The Mala Junta resident has become one of techno’s MVPs, summoning an undeniable fusion of heaving club sonics and barreling techno momentum. A set from D.Dan threads the needles between the timeless, rushing efficiency of artists like Luke Slater or Surgeon, while adding a modern twist and a sense of deviance that is completely captivating. D.Dan brings the ruckus with effortless cool and enough power to leave the dancefloor staggering. Quelza returns, tapping into a feverish vein. Like D.Dan, he puts his own stamp on true school, warehouse-grade techno. In Quelza’s case, there’s a spacious elegance to his productions. While many of his peers are content to merely bash away, Quelza matches brutal impact with stirring beauty. Infra’s CSILLA makes her second appearance in the room, delivering taut, sci-fi techno that reaches terminal velocity. Finally, Cotton returns for one more session. An affiliate of the notorious Outlaw crew, Cotton’s raw, searing sets spare no one.
Who better to wrap STUDIO’s 2024 run than its first dedicated resident, Massimiliano Pagliara? The Italian maestro is absolutely revered for his tapestries of sumptuous melodies and driving percussion. No one does it quite like Pagliara. His Escher-esque arpeggiations spiral into the ether, drawing dancers up to the heavens, while his throbbing grooves feel rooted in the web of all dance. An artist of striking versatility, you nonetheless know Pagliara from the first moment of contact. His sound bathes the listener in warm, gleaming synth textures, and seems to emanate a radiant glow from within. Jason Kendig shares a fellow feeling with this approach, accentuating his sets with a pulsating low end and neon sizzle rooted in Italo disco. But Kendig’s sets know no boundaries; he’s a true “journey” DJ, taking you to the heart of the matter. LA’s Masha Mar is an even-more emphatic proponent of disco’s hedonistic will to liberation. The NTS resident digs deep in the crates, bringing a boiling, even sleazy, energy to the booth.
