Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss "has built their career around unshakable rhythm, blinding curiosity, and a profound sense of artistic freedom" \[Alternative Press\]; and their music "careens wildly from flute-forward spiritual dreaminess to Ralph Records angularity, from bubbling IDM to a catchy, hypnotic sample-delia straight out of early 2000s college radio" \[The Quietus\].
Mighty Vertebrate — Butterss' first solo album since Activities, which Pitchfork hailed as "one of the most exciting, undersung jazz releases of 2022" — was released in October 2024. The album is their International Anthem debut as a leader, and finds Butterss fronting an ensemble that includes saxophonist Josh Johnson \[ETA IVtet, SML\], guitarist Gregory Uhlmann \[SML\], and drummer Ben Lumsdaine \[Durand Jones\], as they explore a unique, wholly origina sound that intersects Tortoise on Standards as much as it does Four Tet or any of Junichi Masuda’s 8-bit school bus classics.
The night is opened by the improvisational duo of synthesist Jeremiah Chiu and saxophonist Alabaster DePlume. This will be just the second time the two artists have played music together, the first time being an impromptu Sunday morning "synth bath" performance at the Vintage Synth Museum in Los Angeles.
This show is the third of a three night run curated and presented by International Anthem, featuring three exciting new projects from the same small group of Los Angeles-based artists on the label \[Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet, SML, and Anna Butterss\], all of whom released new albums in the second half of 2024. A limited number of ticket packages for all three nights are available.
