Guitarist Jeff Parker \[Tortoise\] leads his legendary ETA IVtet featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson \[Meshell Ndegeocello, Leon Bridges, SML\], bassist Anna Butterss \[Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, SML\], and drummer Jay Bellerose \[Robert Plant, Allen Toussaint\] in a performance to celebrate their new International Anthem / Nonesuch Records co-released album The Way Out of Easy.
Following the ETA IVtet's Pitchfork "Best New Music" honors-earning 2022 album Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, the legend of the band grew well beyond the Los Angeles community that'd been seeing them play almost every Monday night since 2016 at the now-shuttered Highland Park cocktail joint ETA.
Over seven years of holding down that residency, Parker’s ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form \[sometimes stretching out for 45 minutes or more\] journeys into innovative, often uncharted territories of groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist and mantric improvised music.
With that musical growth, the crowds for Parker and his band at ETA grew across the years too. What started as a sparse gathering of weeknight drinkers, friends, family, and Chicago expats \[coming to get a shot of nostalgia for the atmospheres Parker used to create at Rodan across the ‘00s and early ‘10s\] grew into a Los Angeles nightlife staple with a packed house and a line of down the block for every show.
The release of Parker and the ETA IVtet's new album The Way Out of Easy follows the closing of the venue ETA in December 2023, and represents the band's persistence, growth, and forays into new spaces and places, including Brooklyn's Public Records in December 2024, and Big Ears Festival in March 2025.
This show is the first of a three night run curated and presented by International Anthem, featuring three exciting new projects from the same small group of Los Angeles-based artists on the label \[Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet, SML, and Anna Butterss\], all of whom released new albums in the second half of 2024. A limited number of ticket packages for all three nights are available.
Tickets to all three shows can be purchased here: https://link.dice.fm/ocab8cabb6b7
