Description
MORD is, for any techno fan paying attention, a household name. The Rotterdam label’s unimpeachable commitment to destructive, artistically uncompromising techno has set it apart from their first release, and the label’s showcases are consistent highlights. Label boss Bas Mooy returns, embodying the ethos that has defied the catalog. His sets ride a fine line, teetering on the edge of emergency broadcast system sonics, but always bolstered by a heavy, classic groove. Adriana Lopez is a self-described techno purist, which means she’ll fit right in. The Bogota-born artist has been a major presence in the underground for two decades, and her sets show no sign of slowing down. Lopez’s mixing perfects a tight, nervy urgency. UFO95 returns, once more bringing the live set. The Parisian artist’s wide-screen, HD tracks makes the most out of an economy of means; his releases on labels as esteemed as Tresor live by the “all killer, no filler” motto, slamming it out while maintaining a poised spaciousness. Aöcram’s elemental, hypnotic productions seethe with a ferocity that feels like it’s bubbling up from the center of the earth. Revealing precious little about themselves, Aöcram instead keeps things focused squarely on the music, and the gambit pays off.
Physical Therapy is back in STUDIO. The Allergy Season founder is one of NY’s most seasoned and expert practitioners of loopy, psychedelic head-twist groove. Since his initial breakout over a decade ago, Physical Therapy has approached DJing with a sense of refined playfulness and prankster-ish unwillingness to hew to conventions. It’s made him one of the most consistently vital and compelling artists in an extremely crowded, every shifting field. He’s matched with some esteemed friends: Mike Servito is a frequent colleague, running down a similarly deep and heady vibe. Servito’s mastery of pumping, jacking house in a classic Chicago lineage is frankly peerless. A longtime resident of The Bunker, with connections to No Way Back, the Detroit-born artist is one of NY’s true standard bearers. Sister Zo’s radical bass expansions and rhythmic syncopations have flipped the room as few can. Last year’s “Arcana” bubbles with glistening, future-facing flavor and thundering drops.
