Description
October opens with an absolute blowout: DJ Stingray 313 returns alongside Boston 168 and Elle Dee. Stingray’s credentials are unquestioned and, by many metrics, unmatched. A true global ambassador to Detroit, Stingray fuses technical prowess and an undeniable mastery of hard-hitting machine funk with feverish precision. His story is a classic, but too good to not be told: schooled in DJ by Moodymann, with early gigs at a Detroit biker bar, Stingray soon became affiliated with the iconoclastic duo Drexciya, collaborated with Carl Craig, Rick Wilhite and Moodymann in 3 Chairs and launched his own Micro Audio label. Years of diligence, wild solo productions and unwavering determination have led him to a well-earned position on the global stage. But no amount of exposure can dilute the raw power of his music. Italian acid techno duo Boston 168 return. The title of last year’s “Giganti” EP describes their productions perfectly: Boston 168 supersizes the 303, creating one absolute monster after another. DJs should be warned, these are tracks you play at your own risk; once you’ve tapped into this energy, there’s no going back. But even amidst the IMAX scale power, Boston 168 still manages to find depth, contrast and emotional resonance. NY’s Elle Dee opens it up with slabs of granite-thick techno. The Mild Fantasy founder is one of the most consistent and consistently-evolving voices in the city’s musical landscape.
Herrensauna resident DJ Saliva brings a dose of seething electro nastiness to STUDIO. Always coming in with a dose of grit and a syrupy punkiness befitting their alias, DJ Saliva queers the dance with cheeky humor and undeniable power. Sekucci taps into a rarefied space between plaintive soul and cracking percussion. A string of sets across NY, and more recently across Europe, have shown Sekucci seizing the moment and articulating her vision with commanding confidence. Haruka keeps things wiggly and deep. The NY selector’s febrile imagination renders house as a space of uncanny and fascinating dream logic. There’s an urgency that drives her productions, tempered by a deep and hypnotic flow.
