SLIGHTLY STOOPID - Since forming in 1995, Slightly Stoopid has evolved from a trio into a seven-piece ensemble, establishing itself at the forefront of a growing subculture with its diverse blend of rock, reggae, acoustic soul, hip hop, heavy metal, and punk rock. Founders Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, childhood friends from San Diego's Ocean Beach, have led the band in embracing artistic freedom and commercial success while adhering to a DIY ethos. Their music not only earns the respect of mentors and peers but also inspires young musicians and captivates millions of fans worldwide.
The band's journey began in the mid-1990s when Doughty and McDonald, then high school students, formed Slightly Stoopid and caught the attention of Sublime's Bradley Nowell. This led to their signing with Skunk Records and the release of their debut album in 1996, a punk-inflected project that included a posthumous feature from Nowell. Their surf-inspired follow-up, "The Longest Barrel Ride," continued to build regional buzz.
A significant breakthrough came with the release of "Acoustic Roots: Live and Direct" in 2001, showcasing the duo's songwriting and vocal talents. The band's lineup expanded, welcoming new members and encouraging collaborations with legendary artists like Barrington Levy, G. Love, and members of the Marley family. Between 2003 and 2008, Slightly Stoopid released four studio albums and two live collections, achieving notable success on Billboard's Top 100.
Their seventh studio album, "Top of the World," in 2012, and subsequent releases like "Meanwhile…Back At The Lab" and "Everyday Life, Everyday People," have solidified their status in the music world. The band has also made significant contributions to various charitable causes, highlighting their commitment to giving back.
Slightly Stoopid's continuous growth, both musically and in terms of fanbase, is a testament to their unwavering dedication to their craft and principles. Their eclectic sound, combined with a commitment to collaboration, improvisation, and social advocacy, has made them a pillar of the Southern California music scene and beyond. As Doughty and McDonald continue to lead Slightly Stoopid forward, they remain true to their roots, embodying the spirit of musical exploration and community.
