In The Round Festival partners with Church of Sound for a very special co-headline show featuring two of the most exciting figures in modern American music.
Lonnie Holley's biography is a radically forced version of the "American Dream. Born in 1950 as the seventh of 27 children in Birmingham, Alabama, Holley experienced poverty and abuse in his childhood and struggled along as a day laborer until he "accidentally" found his way to art. As a sculptor, photographer, draftsman or performance artist, the self-taught artist found recognition in the international art scene. Like an exemplary blues singer, Holley transforms the pain and suffering of his biography into something positive and life-affirming. In March, his latest album Oh Me Oh My was released with guest appearances by Michael Stipe and Bon Iver.
Joining Lonnie on this very special evening at In The Round Festival is Matana Roberts, an internationally celebrated composer, performer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist, and mixed-media practitioner. Working across many contexts and mediums, including improvisation, music composition, visual art, dance, poetry, and theatre, Roberts is perhaps best known for their acclaimed Coin Coin project - a multi-chapter work of 'panoramic sound quilting' mixed media performance work, that aims to expose the mystical roots and intuitive traditions of American creative expression, while maintaining a deep and substantive engagement with narrative, history, community and political expression within sonic structures.
Presented by Church of Sound and In The Round Festival.
This is an all-ages event (Under 16s accompanied by an adult, Under 14s accompanied and in seats).
