Description
Brick Lane Jazz Festival takes over **Village Underground** once again on Saturday 27th April for its legendary **Official Afterparty!** Headlining India-born, Sydney-raised and London-dwelling underground mainstay, **Jitwam** (DJ set), with a hand-picked lineup of London's most innovative selectors in support: **Errol & Alex Rita** (of Touching Bass), **Keyrah** and a very special guest act who will be flying in all the way from NYC to join us... Stay tuned for announcements!
**About Jitwam**
With his roots in Assam, northeast India, and his hustle now based in London, the psychedelic soul-savant known as Jitwam has cemented his reputation as a world-class DJ, live performer and label head at The Jazz Diaries.
After finding success through a handful of tracks as well two LPs, ‘ज़ि तम सि हँ’ and ‘Honeycomb’, Jitwam has become a mainstay of the underground. Incorporating sounds from across the world, he marries incisive political commentary with deep introspection creating work that is, at once, wrenchingly intimate and sweetly playful. It’s on his latest record, ‘Third’, though, where his ideas are fully-formed, ready to take flight. *“I’m more inclined to release music that means something to me as opposed to ‘I got a hit record’”* , he says.
Like the city, ‘Third’ skips across genres nimbly with a drunken bravado collecting along the way influences from Latin music, soul, punk, and a lot of disco. It melds all these genres into a singular rich sound showcasing, yet again, how Jitwam has carved out a path unto himself.
Utilising knowledge acquired through years spent digging through dusty crates, and talents honed as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist, jitwam moves freely between the dancefloor and your headphones, fusing musical identities and stitching together ideas into some of the warmest music you’ll hear all year.
**About Errol & Alex Rita**
Errol is one of the UK's most compelling, contemporary musical voices: DJ/broadcaster, music curator (prev. White Cube/Frieze, 180 Strand and Boiler Room), consultant, writer/host and founder of musical movement, Touching Bass. Underpinning it all is a passion for promoting the eclecticism of Black music as well as the culture and community behind it, with roots firmly anchored in his Caribbean heritage.
His DJ sets are known for feeling beautifully loose, searching and soulful; unrestricted by genre and anchored by groove.
Alex Rita — the Copenhagen-born, London-based selector, illustrator, singer and designer — is a talented seamstress in more ways than one. Alongside her partner, Errol, she is the main force behind Touching Bass, the South London-based community-come-club night, concert series, record label, staple NTS Radio show and curatorial/creative studio, which has slow-cooked to become a musical institution.
As a DJ, her passion for stitching together patchworks of percussive grooves and organic sounds stem from a youth spent in the nature-rich lands of rural Denmark. Listeners can be blessed with everything from spiritual jazz and soul to broken beat and warm house grooves in one sitting.
**About Keyrah**
People pleasing gets a bad rap. Keyrah’s got it down.
Known for playing pick-and-mix with a magnitude of genres, Keyrah’s eclectic approach to her curations allows her to seamlessly blend between a multitude of club settings and radio shows across the world. She steps away from the obvious choices yet always appeases thecrowds. It’s effortless and refreshing.
She cites her musical richness from a household of eclectic sounds played by her parents and her background in music performance. Present day, you can catch Keyrah spinning music from various corners of Future Sounds, Electronica, House, R&B, Rap, Soul, Indie and Jazz but to name a few, all of which is reflected in her monthly residency with Rinse FM. She’s an all-in-one sound collective - without a lens or some criterion for selection. It’s the sort of filter that’s often unstated but clearly detectable among DJs.
Since moving in 2019, the Birmingham born selector is fast-becoming a favourite in London’s competitive scene, she plays, crushes her set and does it all over again. There’s no gimmick. Every venue is her pitch, playing the likes of Koko, Fabric and XOYO and hosting guest mixes for BBC 1Xtra and NTS Radio. She’s kept crowds toasty for players like Jorja Smith and Mansur Brown and has been turning tables for brands such as Pioneer, Nike, Stussy, Hypebeast, Coach, Selfridges and LN-CC.
*“Different day, different track, different mood”* - Keyrah
