Description
Oscar Mulero closes out 2023. The Spanish artist is one of the top practitioners of techno brutalism and sonic distillation. His tracks play like loving crafted sculptures, wrought in iron, concrete and granite. Mulero finds grace in darkly-hued textures and a pared-back approach that borders on stillness. But this deep focus packs a serious punch, drawing listeners in with hypnotic patience and then unleashing. In this sense, Mulero is a techno alchemist. He boils materials down to their essence to extract secret, untapped treasure buried within. BASEMENT residents Beatrice and Lydo return. Beatrice is a fellow Spaniard, and like Mulero she draws on techno’s linear, driving core. However, Beatrice is more engaged with the golden era of the ‘90s, when tracks rushed with an unheralded urgency and full-throttle vibrancy. Lydo is one of NY’s finest. The X-TRA.SERVICES founder crafts their own lineage of queer dance, pulling from the hypnotic, anthemic and tunneling in equal measure.
Resident Newa is back at STUDIO. It’s a perfect match. Her wide-open approach to techno has made her regular appearances at Bassiani fan favorites, but her open ears and versatile selections give her plenty of opportunity to go far beyond the genre. A set at STUDIO should feature all the hallmarks of a Newa set: expert mixing and nuanced, emotionally evocative bangers. Jason Kendig helps round out a banner year. As one of STUDIO’s most consistent artists, his expansive, luscious approach to house music exemplifies how versatile and expressive the genre can be. A true original, the Detroit-native’s decades of digging give his sets a transcendent glow. State of Bliss founder Ian Crane raises the roof. The NY organizer and DJ goes for the full, unabashed release of the rave.
