“Rasta always spreads consciousness, and speaks for the consciousness of the world. It doesn’t matter whose in charge, Rasta speak for the East, North, West, and South. Not only for America, but for Africa, Europe, Asia and all over the world. Rasta speaks for Solidarity, Upliftment and Education. The past is the present and the present is the future.” — Andrew Bees’s
Andrew Bees front man from Black Uhuru, also known as Oneil Norman Beckford, has been a prominent figure in the reggae music scene for over two decades. Born in the Waterhouse District of Jamaica on May 17, 1972, Andrew's musical journey began at a young age, influenced by the rich reggae, R&B, and soul music of Jamaica. By the age of 14, he was already performing regularly on Radio Jamaica's "Colgate Cavity Fighters Club" program, where he caught the attention of reggae legends like Augustus Pablo, Half Pint, and Wayne "Sleng Teng" Smith.
In 1995, Andrew released his first solo studio album, "Militant," which marked the beginning of his solo career. However, in 1996, he was invited to join the Grammy Award-winning group Black Uhuru as their lead vocalist, leading to extensive international tours and collaborations. Andrew's musical journey continued with Black Uhuru, including recording albums like "Unification" and "Dynasty" and performing with renowned musicians like Sly and Robbie. In recent years, he has returned to his solo career, releasing albums such as "I-ration" and "Real Life," showcasing his commitment to spreading consciousness and justice through music. Andrew Bees's dedication to reggae as a medium for solidarity, upliftment, and education resonates not only in America but also worldwide.
