Description
Public Records, Tone Poem and TOC present: A rare evening with Portland abstract music stalwarts Visible Cloaks in collaboration with legendary Japanese ambient musicians Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Shibano. Performing together since their collaborative 2019 LP serenitatem for RVNG Intl.’s intergenerational FRKWYS series, their quartet configuration melds acoustic and digital instruments into a sound-world that is effortlessly serene. Ojima and Shibano were integral figures within the Japanese kankyō ongaku (environmental music) movement in the 1980s and 90s alongside peers/collaborators Hiroshi Yoshimura and Satoshi Ashikawa, and Ojima’s participation in mythical satellite radio experiment St. GIGA served as a framework for serenitatem and the quartet’s current live show. 2023 also sees the rerelease of Shibano’s historic 1984 recording of lesser-performed Erik Satie pieces Wave Notation 3: Erik Satie, France 1866-1925 (“A cornerstone of Japanese ambient.” - Pitchfork).
While the quartet configuration has appeared live across Japan and Europe, this night marks their US debut ahead of headlining dublab’s Kankyo Ongaku Festival in Los Angeles and a two-day residency at New York’s Public Records (focusing on the mythical St. GIGA). This night in Portland will also feature a solo set from local bass clarinetist Jonathan Sielaff (Golden Retriever) and pre-show listening from Ojima’s St. GIGA DAT archives.
