Description
Since forming over a decade ago in their native Toronto, Keys N Krates have carved their own path via a basscentric, sample-driven sound which melds the realms of electronic, hip-hop and beyond. The group—composed of drummer Adam Tune, keyboardist David Matisse and turntablist Gregory Dawson— has built a venerable reputation as one of the leading live electronic acts today on the strength of their onstage instrumentation and energetic sets.
Keys N Krates first broke into the mainstream in 2013 with the SOLOW EP, featuring the breakthrough single “Dum Dee Dum,” which received gold certification in the US in 2017. Reflecting a sonic evolution many years in the making, their debut album Cura saw Keys N Krates evolving from revered instrumental beat-makers into musically sophisticated producers and songwriters. Cura embodies Keys N Krates’ matured style of now: soulful electronic music created with an organic touch, allowing for open experimentation and sonic curiosity.
In 2019, Keys N Krates self-released a new project titled A Beat Tape For Your Friends. The project displays them "paying homage" to beloved influences like J Dilla's Donuts. The all instrumental project is composed of 11 tracks and features California based producer Jansport J. Subsequent to the project's release, Keys N Krates embarked on a tour spanning across the US and Canada.
In 2021, Keys N Krates released their album Original Classic on Last Gang Records. Complex Magazine called the album, "A richer musical niche [with] balmy Brazilian melodies, vibrant Bollywood samples, and other such offbeat elements." The album consists of 13 tracks, including singles Original Classic and Pull Up and featured artists such as Juicy J, Chip, Haviah Mighty, Lido Pimienta, and Marbl. The Original Classic Deluxe album was released in September 2022, and included remixes from Soul Clap, Justin Martin, TEK.LUN, Byron The Aquarius, etc.
Originally formed as a live hip-hop act in 2008, Keys N Krates have since logged countless hours on the road via a relentless tour schedule and have been recognized for advancing the live performance aspect within electronic music. They have headlined their own tours and performed high-profile sets at the top international music festivals including Coachella, Sónar, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Pukkelpop, Bestival and more.
With each new release, Keys N Krates initiates another step toward a new creative vision, and a breakthrough in sound.
