Short description:
Second generation Korean American Phillip Lee thought he only had two options in life: work for his family’s food truck, or keep using drugs until he died. At 24-years-old, he found out there was a third option: music.
Join former KUOW producer Kristin Leong and hip hop professor Dr. Daudi Abe for a ride through Lee's transformation into Old Chingu and learn how hip hop can save a life. This event will kick-off the launch of Odd One In, Leong's podcast for misfits and unlikely optimists. Themes of this launch episode include Asian representation in hip hop, coming of age, and the American Dream. This program will include a live interview with Leong, a film showcasing the debut episode of Odd One In, and audience Q&A with Leong and Dr. Abe. Doors at 7pm. Proceeds to benefit The Bureau of Fearless Ideas, an enrichment program and publisher amplifying the voices of diverse youth authors.
Kristin Leong is a publisher of ROCK PAPER RADIO and the Executive Director of The Bureau of Fearless Ideas. Dr. Daudi Abe is a Seattle Central College professor and the author of Emerald Street: A History of Hip Hop in Seattle.
Odd One In and this event are supported by 4Culture and The Slants Foundation.
