The nostalgic tones of a Juno-106 combine with ambient layers, sparkling guitars, and airy, bittersweet vocals to define Starover Blue’s sophomore LP Ordinary Magic. Much like Spacegeist, their 2016 debut, the record is a synth-saturated opus, drawing from classical music, dream pop, and folk, as well as sci-fi and dystopian fiction. Tracks “Janeway,” “A B Y,” “Anemone,” and “The Howl Makes No Sound” showcase the group’s penchant for textural experimentation and subtle odd meters.
Founding members Kendall Sallay and Dirk Milotz began their musical partnership in 2007 in the San Jose State University music department. Live, the band pulls from a multi-faceted discography, appealing to fans of acts such as Cocteau Twins, Wye Oak, Beach House, The Joy Formidable, Low Roar, and The Antlers.
