Mick Jenkins is a hip-hop artist and poet who made an impact on Chicago’s hip-hop scene with socially-conscious, intelligent lyrics, and jazz-infused tracks. He got his start releasing online mixtapes in 2012, which led to his critically acclaimed 2016 album “The Healing Component." It debuted at number nine on the R&B/hip-hop chart. In January of this year, he released his latest EP “The Circus.” Jenkins has collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip hop and rap: Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Red Man, Method Man, Cypress Hill’s B Real, , Kirk Knight, Earthgang, and many others.
Featured Contributors:
Reed Harkness attended film school in his backyard and garage, and at age 18, began making a series of short films starring his younger brother, Sam. This was the beginning of his two decades long project: Sam Now, a coming-of-age film that follows his brother from age 11 to 31. The film was selected and funded by ITVS Open Call. Reed also directed the award-winning 30-minute documentary Forest on Fire and Google’s Webby Award–winning Made w/ Code.
Heather Hawksford is a photographer and filmmaker who co-founded Motherist, an artist residency program in the Pacific Northwest with a focus on the ways motherhood informs and strengthens art. She recently produced the award-winning documentary Forest on Fire, about the 2017 Eagle Creek wildfire that swept through the Columbia River Gorge.
David Kwong, a 2014 TED Talk standout, is a magician and a New York Times crossword constructor. His book “Spellbound: Seven Principles of Illusion to Captivate Audiences and Unlock Secrets of Success” was published by Harper Business, and he studied the history of magic at Harvard University.
Left at London is the stage name of Nat Puff, a trans singer-songwriter from Seattle. Before launching her career as a musician, she built a large following on Vine, and recently went viral with a video breaking down how to make a Tyler, The Creator song. (She’s also recorded spot-on impressions of Frank Ocean and Mitski.)
Albert Samaha is an investigative reporter at BuzzFeed. He published his first book, “Never Ran, Never Will,” last year and is working on his next book, “Concepcion,” about how immigrant optimism crashes into American reality.
Topic is proud to present our next live event, “Topic Live: Seeing Is Unbelieving,” a night of music, storytelling, spoken-word performances, multi-sensory experiences and more. We have one goal: to change the way you see the world, in ways you never expected. Several performances will be adapted from programming on our new SVOD service, Topic (learn more about it HERE).
Topic Live will press you to consider an eclectic range of truths and lies. For example - what are your most valuable possessions when it counts, how does your body accurately or inaccurately represent you, how to deceive anyone at any time, and many more. You’ll be guided through the journey by a puzzling magician, an investigative journalist, a singer-songwriter impersonator, a familial filmmaker and others you’ll meet along the way. Mick Jenkins, the hip-hop artist who layered his socially-conscious, jazz-infused music atop the Chicago hip-hop scene, will add his talents to the night.
