Derrick May / Analog Soul
◾️ DERRICK MAY ◾️ Detroit native Derrick May’s contributions to electronic music are matched only by a rarefied few. As a member of “The Belleville Three” alongside Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, May helped to innovate techno as a distinct genre of modern dance music. 1987’s “Nude Photo” was one of the earliest iterations of the fledgling sound, while the landmark “Strings of Life” was one its first global smashes, and remains perhaps techno’s most definitive anthem to date. An early residency at The Music Institute helped to define what DJing could be, while his labels Transmat and Fragile nurtured a younger generation of luminaries, including Carl Craig, Joey Beltram, Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. Few artists can claim to have invented modern music. Derrick May did.
◾️ ANALOG SOUL ◾️ Twin sisters Kat Smith and Jacky Sommer have been holding it down in NY for the better part of the last twenty years. They were named Analog Soul by a friend in 2004 when they started playing on East Village Radio. Since then, they’ve used the moniker as a frame for broad sonic explorations and party-ready approach to DJing. Their sets run the gamut, from NY dancefloor classics to “‘70’s Mongolian shit.” Recent all night sets at Nowadays have brought their chemistry to new highs, allowing them to hold court for a new generation of dancers.
