Event DetailsCarolin Schnurrer - Kontakt
KONTAKT explores the power of physical touch and sound as a new means of communication in a networked, but atomised society. Challenging the boundaries between the individual and the collective, human bodies are turned into momentary unpredictable conductors, where sound passed through skin and bodies behaves like a collective intelligence. The use of analogue media, such as skin, metal and electricity, establishes heterogenous connections on an affective and sensory plane.
Carolin Schnurrer is a Berlin and London based artist, designer and instrument builder, creating sensory experiences with a variety of media, from sound performance and installation to moving image, which are mainly interactive and audience led. Exploring philosophical and scientific notions to examine the boundaries between reality and fantasy, her work reflects on the digitisation of society and questions what these developments mean for the human body and connectivity. Through collaborative work with other musicians, writers, and dancers, she investigates new ways to experience, perform and produce music.
Hailed by Mixmag as ‘the genre-bending DJ dominating top-tier dancefloors worldwide’ and by iconic style mag The Face as ‘a hero of the UK music scene’, Josey Rebelle’s infectious energy and passion for underground music has made her one of the most respected DJs in the game.
With an abundance of accolades for both club sets and radio shows including 50 Most Exciting DJs in the World (Crack Magazine), Top 20 Breakthrough DJs of the Year (Mixmag), 10 Best Radio Shows in London (Time Out), Best Mixes of the Year (Pitchfork), the London born-and-bred DJ seamlessly traverses genres with a raw underground energy that evokes the spirit of her home city with one overwhelming priority: heavyweight selection first and foremost.
Josey was introduced to the decks at an early age, taught to DJ by her brother on his house, techno and hardcore collection when she was 13, but it was some years later that she graduated from bedroom DJ to the club, eventually earning her stripes as a resident at legendary London basement club Plastic People.
She has since graced the line-ups of clubs across Europe, Asia and North America including Panorama Bar, Fabric, Concrete, Smartbar, MoMA PS1, De School and Nitsa, and has held down an exclusive London residency at The Pickle Factory since 2018. Josey has also been booked for festivals including Dimensions, Primavera Sound, Nuits Sonores, Bestival and Afropunk NYC, has recorded highly-acclaimed mixes for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, Resident Advisor, The Face, The Fader, Discwoman, Fact Magazine, and also appeared on the very first official Boiler Room broadcast in 2010.
While her club sets centre around house, techno and breakbeat sounds old and new, Josey demonstrates the full spectrum of her musical knowledge on her weekly Rinse FM show (every Sunday 9-11pm UK time), described by Time Out as "the best way to spend a Sunday". She has been on the station since 2011.
Loraine James was enticed into the world of music making through her mother, who would go from playing the steel pans to blaring out music from Metallica to Calypso. Having grown up in Enfield, London, she credits the multiculturalism in the city for “broadening my mind and ears”, opening her up to jazz, electronica, uk drill and grime, and this exposure directly informs the music she makes.
Last year she won the PRS Oram award for women in electronic music and that the prize helped her with her live set up, which she's toured with across the UK and EU and finish her debut album for Hyperdub called For You And I.
On one side, For You and I directly explores the complexities of being in a queer relationship in London, and the ups and downs that come with that. The other half of the album is about Loraine and a refection on her life. The artwork, which features a photo of James holding a photo of her estate from ten years ago is a tribute to her upbringing. “I started making music in those flats, news of my Dad and Uncle passing away happened in that flat, I came out to my mum crying in that flat. Most of my life has been there and in so many years time this area will no longer exist.”. Loraine works with emotional foils - the rapper Le3 bLACK on 'London Ting // Dark as Fuck' and My Future and sjnger Theo on 'Sensual', who express these deeply felt emotions. Musically For You and I is rhythmically free flowing and sprawling, with melodies that evolve into rippling keys. It feels like a live jam session with a jazz mentality, contrasting the delicate and abrasive, through a vivid sound palette and an experimental sense of rhythm, but her music is easily felt.
Songwriter, producer, and MC Brother May has worked as solo artist but also n partnership with experimental polymath Mica Levi, the respected composer, producer and musician with whom May has worked closely throughout his career. Their collaborative EP May and Meeks, released in 2016, saw the pair fuse their talents to produce five tracks that defied categorisation, while acting as the inaugural release for CURL Recordings, a London-based imprint that’s now developed into a tight-knit collective made up of Mica, May and Coby Sey.
Since stepping into the studio in 2010 to record the Chopped and Screwed Mixtape alongside Micachu & The Shapes and The London Sinfonietta, Brother May has worked with a varied cast of sonic pioneers, including Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, Matthew Herbert, Ben Vince, Kwes and Tirzah, while supporting visionary artists such as Arca and Mount Kimbie at sold-out London dates: his endeavours haven’t gone unnoticed either, with publications like FACT Magazine and The Fader paying close attention.
After proving his talents as a sought-after collaborator, Brother May is now stepping out as a solo artist with the release of his debut LP, Aura Type Orange. Captivating, electric and exhilaratingly unique, the release reflects on the realisation of inner potential, exploring concepts of growth and evolution while clearly exhibiting May’s own development as a lyricist, producer and creative talent.
