Alex Giannascoli’s lo-fi songs are inventive guitar pop at its best, full of surreal storytelling and addictive melodies that make the mundane feel like a journey. The Philadelphia native’s catalog exists largely as self-produced albums on Bandcamp; by the time he had his first indie label reissue in 2014, Alex G was a DIY project with over five releases to its name. His latest release as (Sandy) Alex G—a rebranding due to confusion with a YouTube star of the same name—came as a refreshing expanse on his established sound. Rocket, which features the twangy fiddle of Molly Germer, blends moments of psychedelic Americana with experimental hardcore.
