Description
Boulder Colorado’s longest-running champions of authentic high-energy funk, The Pamlico Sound are known for their original, contemporary songs and performances, while drawing inspiration from classic legends like Sly & The Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic. The joyful interplay between singer Sarah Sariah and frontman/multi-winds player The Reverend EverReady (Will Baumgartner), augmented by the notorious Soul Shouters Horns and anchored to a heavy-duty rhythm section, combine to create an experience that rivals Old South tent revivals - with everyone moving, shouting and shaking in an audience-interactive celebration of the uplifting power of Pure Funk'n Soul.
The Reverend, Sister Sarah, and the Deacons tell us The Funk Is Not For Sale will be a breakthrough document of the expansive growth the band has experienced since the last TPS release, 2016's Jive Church. While the biggest jolt comes from the addition of Sarah Sariah's lightning rod vocals and soul-shaking spirit, the album also marks the first recording of the latest and greatest TPS horn section yet, adding the electrifying skills of local heavyweights Sarah Mount (alto sax), Matt Wilkolak (trumpet) and Alex Cazet (tenor sax) to Baumgartner's mainstay baritone and soprano saxes, flute and harmonica. In the rhythm section, longtime member Jimmy G's crispy-crunchy guitar work is now more than ably matched with the wicked bass playing of Doctor G (Gareth Shemesh) and churning keyboards of returning member Greg Leistikow, all tied together with solid fiery precision by the newest member of the PamFam, drummer Andrea Spadafora—who seems to have brought his talents on the kit from his native Italy almost specifically to grace and further energize The Pamlico Sound. All the talent and skills in the world still need great songs to serve—and it's the songs that give The Funk Is Not For Sale its biggest reason for being. From the slated singles to the longer workouts, every track on the album offers maximum message, powerhouse pleasure, incendiary inspiration and generous growth. While TPS will always be primarily purveyors of Funk and Soul, with this album listeners will also be treated to an expanded palette of musical colors, including the Reggae-inspired bridge of Talkin’ To Myself, the Afrobeat overtones on Far From The End, the Blue-Eyed Motown meets Pop Rock feel of Soul Knot, and more.
