Description
Conceived in 2012, Smookie Illson is a collaborative music project aimed at injecting the dance music scene with a distinct take on bass music. 'Drop It Low', the first EP by the secretive trio was quickly snapped up by James Amato's Potty Mouth Music and released in the fall of 2012. It's fusion of ideas - a combination of electro / complextro house beats and melodies with hip hop swagger and low end bass - would become a template for their early output. They were soon tapped for an official remix of Deekline & Ed Solo's 'Number 1 Champion' featuring Kidd Money, Million Dan & MC Flipside for Deekline's Rat Records, following a string of well-received bootlegs, released via their Soundcloud and Facebook pages. After their bootleg trap remix of Atlanta artist Ree$e's 'Molly' saw great reaction online, they turned their attention to more 808 bass fueled productions. Not long after their take on Porn & Chicken's 'Take Your Shirt Off' was bouncing around the Internet, they put out the massive rework of DJ Assault's classic 'Ass 'N Titties', amassing over a 1000 downloads in a few days after premiering on the popular Run The Trap music blog. The next original singles, 'Back Up' and 'What U Gun Do' saw similar success, with 'Back Up' receiving consistent play by scene stalwarts like Atlanta's Mayhem. In December, Smookie Illson was recruited by Whiskey Pete's Switchblade Recordings to contribute material and deliver a mix for his 'Straight Leaning' compilation. The resulting composition, 'Make It Clap, Make It Roll', went on to be included in Bro Safari's 'Diplo & Friends' mix , airing on BBC Radio 1Xtra on January 6th, 2013.
