Strategy (live)

Strategy is the singular, long-running alias of Portland mainstay Paul Dickow. Originally conceived in 1999, Strategy came of age during a heyday of Portland's emergence as a hotbed of experimental DIY music culture, and has grown over a nearly 20-year adventure. Despite the sense of 'intention' conveyed by Strategy's alias, his musical creations originate in unexpected surprises and visceral exploration and discovery. Strategy's omnivorous, unpredictable, multi-directional approach to genre has made him something of a cipher; while some artists use multiple aliases to cover diverse musical ground, Strategy'd discography is a puzzle consisting of interlocking aspects of dub, techno, house, funk, ambient, and noise. With acclaimed releases on Idle Hands, Kranky, Khaliphonic / ZamZam, Further, and many others, Strategy has emerged as an enduring figure with a strong cult following among music makers, DJs, and critics. Strategy is not only a music producer but a musician as well who has had tenures in a variety of live bands and collaborations, instilling all his music-including his dancefloor-oriented work-with live and improvised musicianship. Strategy's appetite for absorbing new sounds and discoveries into his production is reflected in his DJing and label endeavors: with longtime collaborator DJ Brokenwindow run the super-eclectic Community Library / Common Language labels and its associated monthly DJ residency -- now in its 13th year.

Chrissy is a genre-bending DJ/producer with productions on esteemed labels like Classic, Freerange, Razor N Tape, and Hypercolour. He specializes in Chicago house, disco, and raveinfluenced sounds, but his 20-year career has ranged from jungle to garage to footwork to freestyle, including a residency at legendary Chicago nightclub Smart Bar.
Chrissy is also a well-regarded voice on dance music history--he ran the popular "My Year of Mixtapes" and "My Year of Edits" blogs, where he posted original genre-focused DJ mixes and disco re-edits every week for a year. He wrote the liner notes for "Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1997", a compilation of classic Chicago ghetto house on Strut Records, and is a go-to historical source for numerous dance music journalists.
In his previous incarnation as Chrissy Murderbot, he helped introduce the world to footwork music through DJ gigs and releases on Planet Mu, Hyperboloid, and others. As Resident Advisor put it, "he provides a unique perspective as one of the earliest people to connect the dots, laying the groundwork for the explosion of interest in juke and footwork by the UK bass community and beyond." He organized the first international tour of footwork dancers, and ran the acclaimed juke/footwork label Loose Squares.
Chrissy currently runs a house music label called The Nite Owl Diner, and its new sister label, Cool Ranch, which releases limited, hand-stamped runs of jacking, disco-inspired Chicago house.
