Description
MUTEK San Francisco's first night at Mezzanine showcases a full array of left-field club music, featuring the North American solo live premiere of legendary dub techno innovator Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Maurizio, Rhythm & Sound); the West Coast debut of EQUIKNOXX, the Jamaican outfit reconfiguring dub and dancehall into new forms; Lee Gamble, a British artist exploring the outer reaches of drum'n'bass and jungle; the West Coast premiere of Japan's Kyoka, who crafts minimal techno-pop with a glitchy edge; the West Coast premiere of Mexico's Debit, part of Distrito Federal culture-jamming crew NAAFI, with visuals by Giselle Zatonyl; and Only Now, a San Francisco artist who blends dancehall, kuduro, industrial, and experimental music into a new sound completely his own. More on MUTEK
MUTEK is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art, whose principal activity is the annual presentation of its namesake festival, launched in Montreal in 2000. Since its first edition, the MUTEK festival has distinguished itself as an international rendezvous for original avant-garde programming. MUTEK showcases a world of constant evolution and incessant refinement: the "MU" in MUTEK is a conscious reference to the notion of "mutation."
From early on, MUTEK has strived to expand its sphere of activities beyond the core festival. These initiatives have multiplied since 2002, resulting in an ever-expanding international network of MUTEK festivals: in Mexico City, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Dubai, and now in 2018, in San Francisco, the first MUTEK edition in the United States.
MUTEK and San Francisco are a natural fit; the Californian city is a locus of art, music, technology, and innovation, where permutation, intellectualism, experimentation, and futurism have long come together. The festival will invite the audience to discover different types of work in myriad contexts -- including live music, sound design, art installations, kinetic sculptures, and panel discussions, and will feature highly renowned artists alongside up-and-coming local and international artists in venues that include museums, clubs, theaters, cinemas, and multi-purpose art spaces.
MUTEK is honored to join San Francisco's cultural landscape, and seeks to redouble the city's reputation as a hotbed of musical and artistic experimentation -- a city where boundaries are pushed, or perhaps even discarded altogether. The inaugural edition of MUTEK.SF runs May 3-6 2018, and annually thereafter.
