‘Walax’, formerly known as Alexander Da Silva, has always been involved with the artistic side of things growing up as a young teenager. He was part of the school band from the ages 11 to 12, as a tuba player, and during his high school years he achieved very high academic grades in his Drama courses which led him to being a star role in many high school plays.
However, his story truly began at the age of sixteen during a pickup game of soccer where his friends were playing classic Trance records in the background. It caught his attention and he quickly developed an appreciation for this type of music. Walax became more and more interested and familiarized himself with well known artists such as Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto.
Walax’s taste in Trance served as a gateway into other sub genres such as Progressive House, Electro House and Tech House. It was within this very direction that the likes of House music stole his heart. As his admiration grew upon his late teenager years, he began following names like Axwell, Thomas Gold, Mark Knight, Bingo Players and Kaskade.
His passion grew deeper and after attending a few shows at The Government in Toronto, he realized that this passion had driven him to pursue a career in music production and live performance.
With little time to waste he purchased his first DJ setup, at 18, which comprised of a second-hand mini controller equipped with the ever so popular Virtual DJ software. Step by step he progressed through different types of setups continuing to practice his skill and studying the structure of audio.
Walax became more involved in the music scene which led to his discovery of other sub-genres such as Techno, Deep House, Tech House and Minimal. These sub-genres quickly captured his appreciation and ultimately led to be his favourite types of House. His favourite producers features the likes of Pleasurekraft, UMEK, Jay Lumen, Steve Lawler, Dubfire, Richie Hawtin and they have greatly influenced his style of playing and interpretation of House music.
Walax’s unconditional respect love for House music drove his dream into reality as he began DJ'ing at private parties and events across the city. In 2013 he finally landed his first local gig in Toronto at Bassline Music Bar. Later in the year he joined, local DJ, Sammie J’s 'House Junky TV' crew which was founded with the purpose of hosting unique parties such as charity events. Shortly after joining the team he expanded his playing territory across venues like Li’ly Lounge, Tota Lounge and The Cage 292.
Walax has only recently broke the ice in the music industry but his passion for music is the underlying factor that keeps him pushing closer to his goals. His satisfaction arises from the connection he builds with his audience and he proves it to be his primary goal within all his work. He continues to remain humble with his music-oriented mindset and has a few projects for the future which include: attaining club residencies, starting his own online radio show, and releasing his first production through a record label.
Walax is confident and motivated to achieve his career goals and will continue to strive forward remembering that the journey is far more valuable than the destination.
