Serge Devant is a DJ and producer who’s groove-laden, deep-house track “Fearing Love” recently featured as the debut release on Jamie Jones and Lee Foss’s new label “Emerald City” in April this year.
Growing up in the Soviet Union, the classically trained pianist was first exposed to electronic music at an early age, influenced by the seminal sounds of Jean Michel Jaare, Depeche Mode, and many others. Equipped with a classical music education, a young Devant moved to New York City in the 90s with his family and instantly fell in love with its raw and authentic culture. Developing an insatiable taste for music, he frequented local haunts like Sound Factory, Twilo, and Tunnel before trawling through record stores in search of the distinctive nightclub sound. After buying his first pair of decks he garnered the attention of several local promoters and landed his first gig at Tunnel.
In 2007, after a couple of successful gigs, he was thrust into the limelight, signing a two-album deal with the biggest independent label in the US at the time - Ultra Records. His first album featured the widely successful “Addicted”, which went on to become one of the biggest dance tracks of 2009.
After a serious back injury from a snowboarding accident left him recovering for a while, Serge took time to reflect and reform his musical style and image. Having found new inspiration, it was then that “Fearing Love” came together. The track immediately hooked Lee Foss who told Serge about his plans for his new label “Emerald City” with longtime partner Jamie Jones, deciding to sign the track as the first release on the label, debuting on April 6th, 2015.
Now with a newly inspired sound, and his music being remixed by tastemakers such as Jamie Jones, Lee Foss and Audiofly to name a few, Serge’s music has finally found a home in today’s vast electronic music landscape. With plenty of new tracks coming out on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels/Rebellion this year, Serge Devant is set to continue to stamp his mark on dance music lore.
