Roman Flügel (born May 5, 1970 in Darmstadt ) is a German producer, DJ and live act in the electronic music scene. Since the 1990s, Roman Flügel has appeared as a producer under various pseudonyms such as Eight Miles High , Roman IV , Ro 70 and Soylent Green . Together with Jörn Elling Wuttke he has published music under the aliases Alter Ego , Acid Jesus , Holy Garage and Sensorama . He has also worked with well-known artists such as Ricardo Villalobosworked together and made a name for themselves in the electronic music scene through cross-genre music productions. Since 2009 he has mainly appeared under his maiden name.
Born in Darmstadt, he learned to play the piano at the age of six and to play the drums at the age of 12. As a drummer he was a member of several bands, which however seemed less interesting to him from time to time when he came into contact with electronic music. In the mid-1980s he became interested in electronic body music in his early adolescence and came into contact with acid house and early techno for the first time in 1987 through the House Trax 1 compilation of the DM Street Sounds series, which he received from his older brother . This compilation features artists like Phuture or Derrick May alias Rhythm is Rhythmwho are considered pioneers of these musical styles and who also inspired Roman Flügel. In the early 1980s he was interested in dance music, such as B. for Funky Town by Lipps Inc.
In addition to the Chicago House Trax compilation, his visits to the legendary former Frankfurt techno club Omen should prove to be formative for his musical career. After acquiring the necessary studio equipment, Flügel passed a demo tape on to Jörn Elling Wuttke from Darmstadt in the early 1990s, whereupon their collaboration was decided. The Frankfurt DJs and co-owners of the record store Delirium Atanasios Christos Macias and Heiko Schäfer , to whom Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke had previously presented their music , then became aware of the duo . In 1993 the sublabels Klang Elektronik andPlayhouse founded. The latter was founded specifically to publish the music of Flügel and Wuttke under Holy Garage . Both sub-labels belong to the mother label Ongaku Musik, which was founded in 1992 . In order to fully devote himself to electronic music, Flügel gave up studying musicology and, as a co-owner of the Ongaku sublabels, was a co-designer for many years, but is currently no longer an active part.
In addition to his work as a music producer, Flügel has been active as a DJ worldwide since the beginning of his career. He has a residency at the Robert Johnson House Club , which Macias opened in Offenbach-Kaiserlei in 1999 . Since the Berghain opened , he has also played on the upper floor in the Panorama Bar.
