"Like Arthur Russell wearing John Oates's moustache while making love to Cat Stevens circa Izitso" - Three Thousand, 2013
Harvey Sutherland is a studio producer and disco minimalist from Melbourne.
The producer and keyboard player has worked steadily since 2013, releasing a handful of coveted records for People's Potential Unlimited, MCDE and Voyage Recordings. Operating from a red-velour-lined recording bunker, Harvey Sutherland brings studio traditions and session musicians to the foreground.
Sharing the name of his breakout 12", 'Bermuda' is Sutherland's live band - a futurist outfit comprising Melbourne musicians Graeme Pogson (drums) and Tamil Rogeon (electric strings). The trio interpret Sutherland's productions with flair and relentless consistency, bringing a unique energy to the club space.
"Priestess/Bravado" from Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda - the label debut for Sutherland's Clarity Recordings - was a runaway success, with support from The Black Madonna, Red Greg and Prins Thomas and critical praise from The Guardian and Resident Advisor. The follow-up EP "Expectations" treads new territory for the Melbourne producer - spanning Harvey's rhythmic influences from the West Coast to West End Records.
Clarity Recordings is his record label and collaborative studio project. It will champion modern Australian records, with Harvey Sutherland back in his natural habitat - the producer's chair.
