Description
For most people, the motion picture titled "The Fast and the Furious" may seem like an over exaggerated tale of a bunch of crazy youngsters racing the streets for money and pink slips, spending their nights running from the police and their days fixing the insanely fast cars they destroyed the night before. But this was a real part of growing up for Detroit import, Nick Haddad, known in today's nightlife as DJ Captn20. However, after years of dumping his dollars into race cars and nudie bars, and battling it out with his brother and racing partner (the late NMCA/IHRA Pro Street Racer Tofie Haddad), Nick decided to take up a new "hobby" that would keep him out of trouble and in the basement. Little did he know...
Teaching himself backwards from CDs to vinyl with a pair of used Technics 1200s that he ironically got from his brother as a birthday gift (and part of a racing bet), Nick began practicing daily in his basement; like most DJs did. After developing a strong passion for house music, Nick put together his first demo titled "House Cleaning" and hit the streets with it. Soon after, he landed a residency at the ultra chic lounge known as The Corner, located in the 5 Diamond Townsend Hotel. From there, DJ Captn20 became a household name in the city, holding down residencies three to four nights a week at the area's most upscale nightclubs and lounges. His style and energy has put him behind the decks at every major venue in the Metro Area, and has made him a staple in the Detroit scene.
Shifting gears, just one year after his intro to the decks, Captn20 formed a music collective known as Basement Beats Productions. Designed to help local talent flourish, Basement Beats has also aided in and been responsible for bringing in talent from all over the world, giving him the opportunity to share the decks with major electronic artists such as Sharam, Kaskade, Fedde le Grand, Chris Lake, Colette, Miguel Migs and others, as well as renowned DJs such as the late DJ A.M., DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Vice and the infamous S.K.A.M. Artist Crew. No stranger to the celebrity world, Captn20 has been called on to perform for such names as Sean "DIDDY" Combs, The Kardashians, Miley Cyrus, Hugh Jackman, Lil Jon, MTV's Jersey Shore, and Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih to name a few.
In 2008, Captn20 became the "Official DJ" of Six Degrees Magazine (now 944 Magazine). In conjunction with Six Degrees, as well as sponsors like MGM Grand Detroit, ABSOLUT Vodka, Jose Cuervo, Lexus Automotive and more, he produced a music compilation titled "Six Degrees of Sound". This collection of six full-length mixes was created to provide VIP guests with a great lasting impression of the music played at various signature events. Each mix provides a unique sound designed to collaborate with the theme of each event.
In late 2009, Captn20 was approached by MGM Grand Detroit to become their new Saturday night resident at V Nightclub and Program Director of Nightlife. Since his arrival, MGM Grand Detroit has reached new heights and is raising the bar for nightlife in Detroit. Shortly after, Captn20 was named 944 Magazine's "Reader's Pick" for Best Club DJ, 2010 & 2011 Real Detroit Weekly "Best Club DJ", and has been nominated for several other notable honors.
Still shifting gears and at top speed, Captn20 is currently hitting major U.S. cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and more. In the process of producing his first major EP release, you can definitely expect to see more of this Motor City gear head from the "Basement"…if you can catch him ;) To be continued...
