You might not have been to Lafayette yet, London’s box fresh new venue in King’s Cross. Not many have. It opened its doors at the beginning of March (after Brit Award winner Dave put it through its paces in a secret show the weekend before opening), but the pandemic soon spread apace forcing it to close again at barely short of two weeks old.

As part of the same family as sister venue Omeara, Lafayette is a cut above. Double the size of Omeara at a little over 600 capacity, this spot has the feel of a scale model Shepherd’s Bush Empire but with a sound system on par with the seminal West London venue. Located within the new Goods Way development for all the food and pre/post show drinks, Lafayette is a musician friendly venue, with its own backstage bar (Nola’s), a sound system that does precisely what you want a sound system to do, and a tech spec to rival venues over twice its size. And it’s a punter friendly one too; impeccable sightlines across the room, a multi-tiered standing balcony, and a venue wide stage allowing you to see all the action wherever you find yourself squeezed between or behind. It’s just a short two minute walk from King’s Cross station, too.

Booked by the Communion Presents team, Lafayette should quickly become the go-to for artists quickly finding their feet and find themselves and their fanbase outgrowing the likes of Omeara. Plenty is planned for when those doors eventually swing back open in 2021, so put it top of your post pandemic go-to list, sign up to their mailing list, and start saving your gig ticket money.

Reflecting on her debut album, I Came Home Late, Ama Lou knows it’s the record she needed to make. “It’s definitely the most personal music I’ve ever released. I dove deep into my songwriting origins for parts of the album.” (‘Bad Weather’ was written at the age of 12), but I wrote most of these songs on the fly. It’s a good reflection of my range as a songwriter and my life over the past few years.”

Beginning songwriting at the age of 11, London-raised Ama burst onto the scene with her first single ‘TBC’ in 2016, catching the attention of artist Drake who cited it as one of the main influences for his 2018 Album Scorpion. Her following EPs ‘DDD’, ‘Ama, Who?’ and ‘At Least We Have This Now’ showed the depth and quality of her sound as well her ability to play with genre and it’s no different for her debut.

Islington Assembly Hall was built in 1929 and was officially first opened on 15 March 1930.

It soon became a popular venue, hosting dances and variety shows, and continued to be regularly used by local organisations, community groups and individuals for awards presentations, tea dances and weddings, up until its closure in the 1980s.

It lay dormant for almost three decades, the hall being used as extra storage for Islington Town Hall next door and the foyer housed Islington Museum before it moved to its present site under Finsbury Library. In 2009, Islington Council raised funding for its restoration with a vision that it could once again be at the heart of life in the bustling north London borough.

Many of the original features were kept – even down to the ashtrays in the tiered balcony, which, although now redundant, add to the charm of the building. The original art deco interior combines with some modern twists to help create a unique feel to any event held here.

Since reopening in March 2010, many music promoters, traders, national companies, community organisations, happy couples and council departments have made use of the flexibility this stunning space offers. Thanks to its renovation, people from all over the country and further afield have trodden the luxurious red carpet on arrival and the original sprung dance floor to experience an event here.

Once the home of tea parties and variety shows, the historic building has adapted well to life in the 21st century. Quickly becoming an important venue in the capital’s exciting live music scene, while continuing to provide to the local community.

The beloved west end venue announced that it would be shutting down for good back in November. “We regret to inform you that The Mod Club Theatre will be closing its doors and operations at 722 College Street…effective immediately,” the message read. “Serving you for the last two decades has been full of great memories and good times.”

But no need to fear, Toronto concertgoers, it looks like the venue will be reopening under a new name: the Axis Club.

The El Rey Theatre is an original art deco theater in the heart of the Miracle Mile, one of Los Angeles' preserved art deco districts. The El Rey was built in 1936 and designed by Clifford Balch. After over 50 years as a first run movie house, the El Rey was converted into a live music venue in 1994. A registered Historic-Cultural Monument, the El Rey has sweeping staircases, an art deco lobby, VIP balcony lounge and a grand ballroom equipped with a full stage.
