Having already sparked musical comparisons to Rhye and Jessie Ware, and having opened for Katy B, Solange and Cody ChesnuTT, it’s safe to say that A K U A’s career as a solo artist is off to a promising start. While her introduction to live music began as a timid backup singer during college, deep down, A K U A had her heart set on a solo project from the moment she stepped on stage. Yet it would take hours of tinkering alone in her bedroom and a brief (but weird) stint singing at a luxury Middle Eastern hotel-bar for A K U A to overcome her self-doubt and hash-out the unique sound she's come to possess. Deciding early on to defy the conventional mold of “singer-songwriter,” A K U A took an interest in music production right away and took to working with production software, loop pedals and vocal effects to curate her sound. What emerged from this musical exploration was a variety of raw and deeply personal songs and soundscapes which A K U A would further develop with the help of producers & multi-instrumentalists Andy Bauer (of Twin Shadow) & Martin Rodriguez. While 2012 marked a series of warmly received live performances at NXNE, Pop Montreal , CMW and Tinderbox Music Festival, 2013 welcomed the anticipated release of her debut EP ‘One’s Company,’ which caught the attention of online tastemakers at Pigeons & Planes, Okayplayer, MTV Iggy, Exclaim!, Yours Truly, IndieShuffle and Earmilk. Compte tenu de l’émotion et de la texture que renferment ses compositions, rien d’étonnant au fait que la musique d’A K U A soit si chaleureusement reçue par le peu de gens qui ont eu la chance d’y prêter l’oreille : il s’agit d’une musique authentique et pure. Puisqu’A K U A a déjà assuré la première partie d’une grande variété d’interprètes, y compris Little Scream, Katy B et plus récemment Cody ChesnuTT, nous pouvons dire, je crois, que sa carrière en tant qu’artiste solo indépendante promet. Bien qu’elle se soit d’abord initiée à la musique en direct en tant que timide choriste pendant ses années d’université, A K U A s’est secrètement mise à chérir un projet solo à la minute où elle est montée pour la toute première fois sur scène. Il lui aura fallu des heures dans sa chambre à peaufiner ses compositions ainsi qu’un bref (et étrange) passage dans un luxueux hôtel-bar du Moyen-Orient (à Muscat en Oman) pour surmonter ses doutes et pour s’approprier l’incomparable son qu’elle est parvenue à développer. A K U A a décidé dès le départ qu’elle sortirait du cadre traditionnel de « l’auteur-compositeur-interprète » et s’est aussitôt mise à la production musicale en passant des heures à apprivoiser pédales d’effet, logiciels de production et effets de voix. Le résultat de cette exploration musicale : une véritable pluralité de chansons pures et profondément personnelles et d’environnements sonores qu’A K U A développera davantage avec l’aide des producteurs et multi-instrumentalistes Andy Bauer (de Twin Shadow) et Martin Rodriguez. Depuis l’enregistrement de son album, A K U A a marqué l’année 2012 avec une multitude de performances solos en direct incorporant des éléments de soul, de pop, d’électro et de R&B. Son éclectisme acoustique a été chaleureusement accueilli à l’occasion des festivals Pop Montréal et NXNE ainsi qu’à New York dans le cadre du Tinderbox Music Festival à Webster Hall. En 2013, A K U A lancera son premier album original intitulé « One’s Compagny » ainsi qu’une vidéo officielle pour la pièce « Gravity » et entreprendra par ailleurs une petite tournée sur la Côte Est au printemps.
