ABAKUS (also known as Cinnamon Chasers) begins 2014 with the Tokyo Express EP - 5 tracks of warm, evocative electronic music that sit somewhere between Sasha, Guy J, Pryda and Tom Middleton, and offering a much-needed step forward from the dead-eyed mediocrity of current EDM.
The son of The Kinks’ founder, Dave Davies, Russ has followed a different musical path, sharing live stages with artists ranging from Amon Tobin, A-Trak, Nero, and 12th Planet through to Diplo, Aeroplane, Paper Diamond and Mad Professor at alt-electronic music festivals like EXIT and Lights All Night with over 50 shows in the US alone last year.
Remix-wise he’s been called in by the likes of The Orb and Roxy Music, and under various pseudonyms he’s grown to become a big live draw from the UK to Australia, and particularly in the US, where EDM fans seek out music with greater substance than a half-arsed Dutch house chord and a limp vocal from Pitbull.
This release mines the deeper end of electronica and melodic house compared to the French-style electro of his former Cinnamon Chasers guise, the project that gained notoriety with the hit tune and video ‘Luv Deluxe’, which won the award at the 2010 SXSW Conference for Best Music Video and became a major online viral hit and screened at over 30 film festivals worldwide.
The Tokyo Express EP features lead track, ‘Lights’, ‘Tokyo Express’, ‘Telepathy’, ‘5am’, and ‘Since I Was Young’.
