Seba Details
Swedish producer Sebastian Ahrenberg hasestablished a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of quality drum &bass over a distinguished career stretching back over 15 years. From his earlytracks on LTJ Bukem’s ground-breaking label Good Looking Records to his morerecent work across labels including Metalheadz, Soul:r and Hospital, Seba'smusic has retained a timeless appeal and brings together beats and bass inclassic yet inimitable style. Ethereal atmospheres, crisp breaks and sublimebass rhythms are hallmarks of a sound Seba has made his own and his DJ setsrepresent this to the fullest. In 2011, he's kicking off with releases on hisown label Secret Operations, Critical, Warm Communications and Spearhead allset including collaborations with Method One and long-time studio partnerParadox.
Originating from Ingaro, an island justoutside Stockholm, Sebastian Ahrenberg started producing in the early 90s.Working with a basic home studio, he experimented with breakbeats and technobefore finding his own unique style in drum and bass. Released on Swedish labelSvek, under the alias Sunday Brunch, his techno productions include some of hisfirst collaborations with long-term studio spars Lenk and Robert Manos.
Seba’s track 'Sonic Winds', written togetherwith Lotek, was among his first drum and bass productions to be released onGood Looking and was selected by label boss LTJ Bukem for his LogicalProgression mix cd series. Further releases soon followed, from the sublime andsoulful ‘Planetary Funk Alert’ to the rich and ethereal ‘Valley of the Moomins’,and marked Seba as one of the finest exponents of an emerging new style.
To showcase his music and bring like-mindedartists to his native shores, Seba started the club night Secret Operations in1997. From humble beginnings in a cellar bar named Tuben in central Stockholm, the club went on to long run of successful nights. By 1999 the club had givenrise to a record label with the same name. The first release on SecretOperations came in the form of a compilation CD entitled ‘Case One’, bringingtogether music from Alaska, Lotek and Seba himself under his Forme guise.Staying true to it’s name, the label then went deep undercover only toresurface again in 2003 to present the 12inch single ‘Pieces/Banett’ by Sebaand Lenk. Since then, the label has hosted Seba’s solo productions as well aswork alongside his friend and fellow breakbeat pioneer, Paradox.
After years of discussing making musictogether, the pair finally joined forces and immediately made an impact withtheir first releases together on Bassbin (‘Frost’) and Freak (‘Planet, Stars’).Their single ‘Move On’ on Hospital Records, featuring the vocal talents ofRobert Manos, was a massive success and proved their sound has both integrityand broad appeal. More recently Seba has collaborated with another longtimecohort, Krazy, on the tracks ‘High Priestess’ for Paradox Music and ‘Arsenic’for DJ Marky’s Innerground label.
In late 2008 Seba released his firstlongplayer on Carharrt’s label Combination Records in conjunction with his ownSecret Operations label. Described by Knowledge magazine as “an accomplishedand timeless slice of drum & bass” (K-Mag Sept 2008), the album will nodoubt stand the test of time and shows Seba at his best delivering classicsound. He also featured twice on the Platinum Series compilation forMetalheadz, with ‘Imperial Moment’ alongside Krazy and ‘Wild One’ featuringRobert Manos on vocals.
In 2009, Seba returned to Secret Operationsfor the single ’34 Alpha’ b/w ‘Devotion’ in collaboration with Kirsty Hawkshaw. He’s also remixed her track ‘Face to Face’ and featured on Hospital Records’Sick Music compilation with the release of ‘Snow.’ This will be followed bysingles on 31 Records, Secret Operations and a follow-up 12” for Hospitalincluding the highly-anticipated ‘Pressure Point’ in 2010. He also has remixesset for Polar (Warm Communications) and Naibu (Horizons), once againdemonstrating his diversity as a producer and the lasting appeal of his uniquesound.
