Elle sera en tournée avec Hemsworth en mai et sortira son deuxième projet à la fin de l’été. On garde l’œil ouvert sur cette talentueuse productrice/chanteuse/modèle.

After releasing "Elle" in February through Ryan Hemsworth's Secret Songs imprint, Montreal native RYAN Playground looks to continue to grow her impressive catalog in 2016. Newspeak borrowed its name from George Orwell’s famed dystopian novel 1984, but the outlook when you step into this nightlife spot is anything but dismal. With a long, well lit bar, plenty of space around for standing, and a more than sufficient dance floor, it’s a comfortable hang out spot that always has room for everyone. The amazing shows at Newspeak are definitely a major draw, but Montrealers can always be found lingering at the bar, sharing stories, and enjoying themselves even when the stage is empty.

Relatively new to Montreal’s nightlife scene, Newspeak just opened in early 2015, but it has already created quite the buzz. Located in the heart of Quartier des Spectacles, the club looks like a speakeasy straight out of the prohibition era, but with a futuristic twist that creates a very interesting vibe. Its avant garde aesthetic is complimented by the various indie, electronic, and other alternative music artists who have played countless shows at the venue since it opened its doors.

Contrasting massive, stadium style setups that can be awesome, but completely lack an intimate feel, Newspeak was made to cater to the fan that really wants to get up close and personal with their favorite artists. The company behind the venue, SJU, is known for curating incredibly unique live events with unconventional international artists and the trend has definitely continued at Newspeak. Part of their mission to make non-mainstream music accessible to the public includes throwing all of their shows at a very reasonable price, usually ranging from $10 to $15.

Resurrected Velvet Underground club will be reopening as a live music venue in February.

Local entertainment group Embrace Presents has taken over the Queen West venue, which closed in September, and plans to open the revived space early in the new year.

“We heard the Velvet was closing, so we immediately reached out as we had always been huge fans of the venue,” says Embrace’s CEO, Adam Gill.

Embrace has already started to revamp it to focus solely on live music. “We plan is to modernize it and we are doing a big renovation as we speak,” Gill says, “The main difference will be that its focus will be on live music as a concert venue where before it was more a club for goth or industrial music.”

The space, which has been a go-to place for rock, new-wave and metal, was dissolved by Liberty Entertainment Group back in September. According to a press release, the Liberty was shifting gears to focus on expanding a repertoire of wine bars and clubs.

Considered a musical institution by many, the intimate venue has featured an impressive roster of Canadian artists, including Alanis Morissette, who celebrated her chart-topping album release party of Jagged Little Pill there in 1995.

Embrace has announced their official reopening party will take place on February 12, with Toronto’s own dystopian-pop group, TRUST to ring in the comeback of the space.

“We had thought it would be an amazing live venue for a few years now,” say Gill. “Since the Bigbop/reverb closed there has been a void left in the market and we plan to help bring live music back to Queen Street.”
