For fans of punk, alt rock, and artists you won’t see on other festival lineups, Riot Fest should be on your bucket list. Started as a showcase festival in Chicago in 2005, Riot Fest has transformed into a multi-day outdoor festival and has spawned editions in Toronto and Denver. The original in Chicago’s Humbolt Park remains the best and most solid lineup of the bunch.

If you visited the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana a couple years ago, you would’ve been met by cover bands, one-hit wonders or closed doors. It had its moments, of course, but those moments were rare thanks to a lengthy closure and lackluster booking. Enter Jon Reiser, former partner and booker for Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Reiser purchased the venue and made several significant changes: booked popular acts, upgraded the sound system, added a smaller venue-in-a-venue called the Constellation Room. The Observatory now hosts popular acts such as Method Man , GWAR, Tiesto, Waka Flocka Flame and many, many more. That also includes residencies from local acts. Selling out shows is now a habit for this place. Most of all, it provides a valuable service to the whole county by bringing in acts we could usually only see by driving to Los Angeles. Oh, and it even—gasp!—makes Angelenos cross the Orange Curtain for a show.

We opened in October 2005.  This was my first foray into club ownership, after having booked other people’s rooms for the 8 years prior.  And even though it was in Colorado Springs, 100 miles from my home, I knew it was the right place.  I had a couple partners at the time, and it was good to have the help given the distance from home.  Time went on, and the partners moved onto other things leaving me as the sole owner.  This was ok, because by this point, I had a great staff there running the place.  The list of artists that have played the Black Sheep is as enormous as it is impressive.   This tiny 450 cap room has played host to the likes of everyone from Imagine Dragons to Daughtry, to Gwar, to Macklemore, and the list goes on and on.  The Sheep has always been a special place.  We just celebrated our 10th anniversary which unfortunately coincided with the untimely and tragic death of our longest tenured employee Chris Forsythe.  Chris was our sound man and head of production.  He was the heart of the Black Sheep and the place will never be the same without him.  But, as I said, the Sheep is a special place.  We have a great staff and our guests that come to the shows consider the Sheep their home.  This was clearly evident during the memorial for Chris.  I have never seen the Sheep so packed.  There were so many people in the venue they were spilling out into the parking lot.  This was not only a testament to the impact that Chris had on so many people, but the impact that the Black Sheep has had on the city of Colorado Springs.  The Black Sheep is an important thread in the fabric of Colorado Springs and we are proud to be able to do what we do there.  The Black Sheep has been voted “Best Live Music Venue” in Colorado Springs every year since we’ve been open.  I think we’re doing something right.  The Black Sheep is moving into a new chapter.  We have some big plans and we will be there for many years to come.  We look forward to creating more memories for all the fans that flock to the Sheep.

The beer garden is one of the city centre’s most beautiful; the trademark hanging lights illuminating many an after work drink and late night get together, whilst throughout the summer our regular acoustic sessions, art events and barbecues affirm the garden’s place as one of the coolest and cosiest corners of the city centre to hide away from it all and enjoy some nice drinks.

Since we first opened in 1999, we’re pretty proud of what our little Pelham Street venue has achieved. We’ve welcomed some of the world’s biggest talent to our stage for around 200 people, we’ve poured millions of pints of our famous Bodega Lager and danced the night away for plenty of weeks at one of our many clubnights.

When Dana Sims opened his nightclub/live music venue in downtown Seattle in 2005, the name was a no-brainer: El Corazón. Meaning “The Heart” in Spanish, the space El Corazón inhabits has functioned as a live music venue, club or bar since 1910, and helped launch some of Seattle’s most iconic bands. (Previous names of the space include Graceland, The Off Ramp, Sub-Zero, The Eastlake East Cafe and Au Go Go). The venue was the heart of the grunge explosion in the ’90s that changed Seattle and music forever; Pearl Jam’s first five shows were in this room. Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Mudhoney all cut their teeth here. Nirvana even debuted an early version of Aneurysm here in 1990, before it was changed for its official release the next year. El Corazon has served as the launching pad for new generations of Seattle bands that have gone on to big record deals and world tours (The Fall Of Troy, Macklemore, Aiden, Schoolyard Heroes, Himsa, 3 Inches Of Blood, This Providence, Monsters Scare You, etc). While many Seattle venues have shuttered, El Corazón is still pumping life into the scene. The venue continues to host national and international acts, provides local bands with a place to build their foundation, and remains one of the leading concert halls for the all-ages crowd.

The El Rey Theatre is an original art deco theater in the heart of the Miracle Mile, one of Los Angeles' preserved art deco districts. The El Rey was built in 1936 and designed by Clifford Balch. After over 50 years as a first run movie house, the El Rey was converted into a live music venue in 1994. A registered Historic-Cultural Monument, the El Rey has sweeping staircases, an art deco lobby, VIP balcony lounge and a grand ballroom equipped with a full stage.

The venue’s stages have played host to a list of artists which reads like a dessert menu of alternative music royalty.  Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Fugazi once graced the same stages that are today occupied by Odesza, Death Grips, Future, In This Moment, Little Dragon, Taking Back Sunday and countless other amazingly popular and influential bands.

Its live music mostly consists of alternative music styles, such as indie rock, metal, punk rock, rockabilly, and electronic, ranging from local acts to ones internationally known. The Masquerade's three principal interior stages are named after the destinations of the afterlife: Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell — though they are now all on the same level with separate entrances. At the mill, Heaven was upstairs above Hell at the right (west) side of the building, with Purgatory as the bar area downstairs to the left, all accessed from a central entryway behind the box office with a stairway to Heaven.

The Bomb Factory and its neighboring venue Canton Hall have been rebranded as The Factory in Deep Ellum and The Studio at the Factory, according to new websites and social media accounts for the new venue.

The phone number and email address for The Bomb Factory have also been delisted, indicating the change for the historic venue is already underway.

Terminal West is a 7,000 square feet music venue with exceptional lighting and sound systems. Terminal West has two bars and connects to the King Plow art center’s restaurant, Stationside, which is open during all live shows, and for lunch on Tuesday – Friday. They have an extensive beer list and other creative drinks. Interestingly, the Terminal West bars serve only canned beer from notable craft breweries such as 21st Amendment, Oskar Blues, Avery, New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, and many more. There is also a balcony that provides patrons with an eagle-eye view of the action on stage during performances, and an outdoor roof deck overlooking the historic Atlanta train tracks. Though it is one of Atlanta’s younger music venues, having opened during the Spring of 2012, Terminal West quickly rose to prominence. Though it started with heavily electronic and dubstep shows, Terminal West has evolved into a well rounded space with more indie and rock acts in its lineup. To date, artists such as Ok Go, Walk the Moon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Caribou and People Get Ready have performed.

Resurrected Velvet Underground club will be reopening as a live music venue in February.

Local entertainment group Embrace Presents has taken over the Queen West venue, which closed in September, and plans to open the revived space early in the new year.

“We heard the Velvet was closing, so we immediately reached out as we had always been huge fans of the venue,” says Embrace’s CEO, Adam Gill.

Embrace has already started to revamp it to focus solely on live music. “We plan is to modernize it and we are doing a big renovation as we speak,” Gill says, “The main difference will be that its focus will be on live music as a concert venue where before it was more a club for goth or industrial music.”

The space, which has been a go-to place for rock, new-wave and metal, was dissolved by Liberty Entertainment Group back in September. According to a press release, the Liberty was shifting gears to focus on expanding a repertoire of wine bars and clubs.

Considered a musical institution by many, the intimate venue has featured an impressive roster of Canadian artists, including Alanis Morissette, who celebrated her chart-topping album release party of Jagged Little Pill there in 1995.

Embrace has announced their official reopening party will take place on February 12, with Toronto’s own dystopian-pop group, TRUST to ring in the comeback of the space.

“We had thought it would be an amazing live venue for a few years now,” say Gill. “Since the Bigbop/reverb closed there has been a void left in the market and we plan to help bring live music back to Queen Street.”

The Wiltern Theatre originally seated 2,344. Subsequent modifications in 2002 removed the 1,200 permanent seats on the ground floor to allow for a variety of configurations from a standing room only crowd of 2,300 to a more intimate seated arrangement holding 1850 people. The loge and mezzanine levels in the balcony continue to offer fixed theater seats. The venue remains one of the largest theaters in Los Angeles.
