Kinky Details
This ever-hot electric five-member band from Monterrey, Mexico formed in 1998 consists of Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Góngora, and Cesar Pliego whose music is heavily influenced by Latin music, rock, dance, and techno. While the majority of their songs are sung in Spanish, many feature both Spanish and English lyrics. Kinky is one group with International appeal playing their funky, danceable, electric, rhythmic sound.
Kinky has received multiple nominations from both the Latin Grammy Recording Academy and the Latin MTV Video Music Awards. Kinky, who has obtained 5 nominations for the MTV awards in 2002, and 4 more in 2007. Kinky was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album (Sueño de la Máquina) and Best Alternative Song (Negro Día) at the 2012 Latin Grammy Awards. The album was produced and mixed by legendary Dust Brother, John King, who has produced Beck, Rolling Stones and Beastie Boys amongst many others. Mastering this album was tackled by Howie Weinberg who is responsible for iconic albums such as Blood Sugar Sex Magik of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana’s Nevermind and U-2’s Pop.
Kinky’s enormous popularity is palpable in each of its live shows. The energy onstage has permitted the band to perform in some of the best festivals worldwide, multiple times. The group has toured with artists as legendary and diverse as the Flaming Lips, Shakira, Los Lonely Boys, Cake and De La Soul, and has commanded the stage at large festivals such as Coachella, Voodoo Music Experience and Central Park Summer Stage. They’ve also had great success in the TV/film world with over 60 placements in TV shows (like 90210, CSI Miami and Dexter), commercials (like Nissan and Pontiac) and video games (like EA’s Need For Speed 2009)
Their first album, called “Kinky”, was released in early 2002 and was an instant success in Latin America, with some success in the U.S.. Their second single, titled "Más", is nowadays their most known single all around the world. "Más" was used in commercials for Nissan and the NBC Mexican Mafia mini-series Kingpin. Crackdown, and the movies Thirteen and Man on Fire, which featured another song by Kinky, "Field Goal". It is in the opening scene, season 4. Used also in the CSI: Miami episode "Silencer".
Kinky is one of many talented musical groups, singers and celebrities featured in director Duncan Bridgeman’s entertaining documentary, Hecho en Mexico, which showcases the vibrant cultural diversity and richness of Mexico through its music.
